Welcome to RAPTORIA!

Homebrew and House Rules

Raptoria (Working Title) is a new continent found on an Earth-like planet out there somewhere. It's home to dinosaurs and raptor-like people. I'll put down my ideas in list form, also less to be copyrighted by Paizo. I'm looking for feedback though.

  • Raptoria is a continent much like Africa and South America today. Hot and tropical.
  • The sun is a standard G2III star. A yellow sun like ours.
  • Races include: Humans, elves, halflings, dwarves, half-elves, raptorians, and caymins.
  • Humans and Elves represent colonial powers. Humans have a culture like Great Britain, and Elves are based off of France and Portugal. Both Humans and Elves are renaissance cultures. Dark skinned humans exist in this land as well, and look like black Africans. They have a middle ages technology.
  • Raptorians are humanoid Utahraptors. They have a culture based off the middle ages. Their strengths are that they are silent hunters and eat mostly sauropod meat and hadrosaur meat.
  • Caymins are humanoid caiman crocodile/alligators. They enjoy hunting for meat and human flesh is a delicacy for them. Their culture is based off the middle ages. They also protect the heart of Raptoria.
  • Halflings are a race based off the legendary African pygmy. They have a dark ages technology and have black skin and african faces.
  • Dwarves have a Bronze-age technology, and are a black skinned race that mine tin and copper.
  • Dinosaurs roam the land. I'm Getting GURPS Dinosaurs for this.
  • Raptorians are thee dominate race in the land.

Okay, what do you think? So far a list but a lot to build on.

CAMPAIGN WORLD HOOKS

  • Colonialism for elves and humans.
  • The Heart of Raptoria is a large magic crystal. Very valuable.
  • Raptorians are the dominate race in a land dominated by dinosaurs.

  • The sun's G2 V (yellow dwarf/main sequence) not a G2 III giant. Not that it matters but just so you know.

Being a carnivore isn't a strength. On the level of a civilisation it's an extreme limit on population density and supplying an army, even for an adventurer it's an occasional nuisance.

Assuming you want players to be able to choose any of these races, how bad are race relations? Do any humans and elves see human-eating caymins, or even just africanoid halflings as possible equal partners in a venture? If not, how can a party work?

Thanks, I must have made a mistake (G2 star).

Well, I'm removing the Caymins, there was a mistake there. Too many carnivorous races competing for the same resources. Races are:

    • Humans and elves (renassiance), Raptorians, African halflings, and African humans (middle ages), and finally Dark Dwarves (bronze age).
    • Race relations are not as bad as you might surmise. This is fantasy, so everyone tends to get along.
    • Raptorians are not densely populated, yet they are the dominating race of the continent.

Raptorians (Dinosaur) (RP Total: 5 RP)

    • Type: Raptorians are humanoids with the dinosaur subtype. (0 RP)
    • +2 Dex, +2 Wis, -2 Str: Raptorians are naturally fast and quick and aware of their surroundings. But they lack prodigious strength. (0 RP)
    • Medium: Raptorians are medium sized. (0 RP)
    • Speed: Raptorians move at 30 feet per round. (0 RP)
    • Silent Hunter: Raptorians reduce the penalty for using Stealth while moving by 5 and can make Stealth checks while running at a –20 penalty (this number includes the penalty reduction from this trait). (2 RP)
    • Low-Light Vision: Raptorians can see twice as far as a race with normal vision in conditions of dim light. (1 RP)
    • Claws: Raptorians receive two claw attacks because of the claws on their big toes. These are primary natural attacks. The damage is 1d3. (2 RP)
    • Language: Raptorians are xenophobic, they begin speaking Raptorian. Raptorians with high intelligence scores may learn Common, Elven, Dwarven, and Halfling. (0 RP)

Description: Raptorians are humanoids that have evolved from Utahraptor ostrommaysorum. Males average from 5'6" in height to 6 ft. With females averaging from 5'4" to 5'10". Because of their reduced strength, Raptorians tend to be lithe, although stronger and fatter raptorians are not unheard of.

Raptorians lack the feathers of their animal counterparts, being entirely bald. They have red scaly skin, and the distinctive claw on their big toe. They stand plantigrade and have five toes on each foot. They also have an opposable thumb on each hand plus five fingers. Their heads are saurian in appearance. They have eyes that range from gold to brown, to red, to blue. With blue eyes often standing out. Raptorians have lost their dinosaur tails during their evolution.

Raptorians enjoy a meaty diet, being carnivorous. They primarily eat sauropod and hadrosaur meat, although they will hunt mammals for red meat. They have razor sharp teeth.

Culture: Raptorians live in tropical regions and enjoy a middle ages culture. They know how to make steel and often produce steel to make into spear tips, arrowheads, and swords. They are always clad in the sky, although they have made baldrics out of leather to hold swords, daggers, javelins, and sometimes arrows.

Raptorians are a shamanistic culture worshiping one god, called Nawli. Nawli is viewed as a Raptorian with male attributes. The Raptorians are patriarchal, with the males having hunting duties and the females having duties attributed to the home. When a young male reaches the age of puberty, he joins other boys in learning how to become a man. Usually this includes the practice of performing oral sex with other boys, a practice that is encouraged to stop when the boy is married.

Due to their shamanistic culture, a boy cannot become a man until he fulfills a vision quest. The shamans send the boy out on their vision quest in which they will often have to find their place in the world as man. The vision quest ends when the boy returns home after having a spiritual experience. After that, the boy is circumcised, showing that he has become a man.

Relations: Raptorians admire trust and understanding. They hold honesty above all other things, and often will respect other members of other races for speaking their mind. They have no attitudes of note to other races except for humans.

Not very often, the raptorians will compete with other humans for the same resources. Usually hunting a gazelle at the same time. Humans don't view dinosaurs as a food item, but raptorians view gazelles as a food item. So they will compete. This competition has made raptorians wary of other humans. When the white humans arrive, their wariness of humans is enhanced with their use of guns as a weapon.

    Sounds interesting.

Are there any other Non-PC races? Orcs, goblins, etc?

What about dragons? How do they fit into a world of dinosaurs?

Unsure. I have to think that far ahead. Certainly every culture has dragons. Presumably they evolved from a flying reptile. Dragons are diametrically opposed to humans. So I think they would be rare.

As for non-pc races like orcs and goblins, this is about the humanoid utahraptors. So there would be different kinds of lizardfolk.

Okay, I didn't get to the question on dragons or NPC folk, but I hacked out a map. I felt that was important. There isn't a scale on the map, but the continent is as big as Africa.

You can view the map here.

I'll get to the rest as the campaign develops. I downloaded GURPS Dinosaurs, and some of them will take some time to convert over to Pathfinder. I also downloaded the World Builder's Guidebook, and its a let down that they haven't included all of the mapping documents. So I did the best I could with this crude map.

    More awaits for some feedback.

The lake connected to two separate river systems looks odd. & are those mountains bisecting the Dune Sea or something else?

Some of those names are of real places, or are very similar to such. This may or may not be a problem for the people you game with, I don't know.
