Pretty much as it sounds. I updated from this account to games I'm running and for some reason, the images have turned into smurfs. None of my past posts from this account have changed, and both new posts have a different image.
Running a virus scan now, but no idea if this something only I see or not.
The above is a new smurf. Checking from a different account.
Okay, it is in fact every post I'm making so far.
I sure hope it's not some kind of smurf virus. It'd be really unfortunate if it spread from your post to everyone on the forums.
Basically, some script looks for any mention, and sometimes anything that autocorrects to smurf.

it's not a bug, it's a feature.
(having the word "smurf" anywhere in your message will change your icon to a smurf)
Pathfinder Maps, Pathfinder Accessories Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Charter Superscriber; Starfinder Charter Superscriber
Here's a demonstration. This is my normal avatar.
Pathfinder Maps, Pathfinder Accessories Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Charter Superscriber; Starfinder Charter Superscriber
And this happens when I put the word smurf in a post. (I do get to keep my purple frame, though.)

And back to normal, because I'm not saying that word.
The particular issue in the post you first noticed the issue in, DM Default, was "David's morph."
It's an old April Fool's Day joke from more than a decade ago, IIRC. Anytime you reference The Blue Ones, even in a misspelling, your avatar for that post changes to a random smurf.
there are some variants that trigger the feature as well.
(ninja'd)
This is what happens when I say smurf

Is it random, or is there some algorithm based on your usual avatar which smurf you get?
Well, you've just gotten two different smurf avatars
Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

I always love when people discover this.
Pathfinder Battles Case Subscriber; Pathfinder Maps, Pathfinder Accessories Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber
smerf, smirf, smorf, s merf, smurph, etc. will all due it to you.
The bad part is that it doesn't show when you preview a post, only after you submit it.

You know what happens to a forum post when it gets hit by smurfs? The same thing that happens to everything else.
Thank goodness. I was worried for second that something had gotten into my computer.

The first rule of smurfing posts is you do not talk about smurfing posts.
The second rule of smurfing posts is you do not talk about smurphing posts.
But the number of smurfs would indicate someone is breaking the first rule...
...or maybe the second...
