My 10 year old daughter and I have played through Rise of the Runelords and Skull & Shackles.

Which is better for.a young player, WotR or MM?

I started WotR, got frustrated and put it aside. I started MM and am enjoying it mush more. I think you would find universal consensus here that MM is much more suited to a 10 year old.

Unless one likes one's games "real hardcore" (which *could* happen even with a young one, I suppose) - MM is better for ANY player.

I concur with Mummy's Mask being more likely to satisfy most players.

Something else you might consider is dowloadable content.

The various "Season of ~" APs allow you to re-use APs that you already have, going through an entirely different adventure. The majority of cards you'll need are in the sets you already have. You can buy some of the cards that are peculiar to the Season APs from Drive-Thru Cards, but the downloadable files also include printable versions of the cards.

You might also consider downloading the characters. The characters for all of the APs and most of the class/character decks are available for free download. You'll find that adventures you're already familiar with can be different and enjoyable when played through with different characters.

As Brother Tyler suggested, I'd play the seasons of RotR and SnS with different characters or even class decks before transitioning to MM.
Depending on how tired you are of the boxes, you can also play the excellent (and free) homebrew APs by Ron Lundeen.

It's cheaper, and you don't have the problem of going back to an older set once you are used to the new, mostly improved mechanics.

Since you are playing with small parties, I don't think that WotR is that more punishing than MM mechanically; I'd rather advice against WotR due to the themes that are explored, rather than because of gameplay.

And despite popular believe on the forums, I don't think that MM is strictly better than WotR; both sets just cater to different playstyles and characters, while WotR unfortunately scales badly for big parties in some places (which I suppose is the reason for its 'hard' reputation, and which doesn't apply in your case). WotR revolves mostly around encounters with nasty monsters, while MM revolves more around nasty barriers, elemental damage and noncombat skills.

D'oh! I can't believe I forgot about the free homebrews.

I absolutely concur with Doppelschwert on the homebrews (not just Ron Lundeen's, but many other scenarios, adventures, and some APs that you can find online) as another great alternative (or addition to) the official APs.

Thank you for all of the responses. My daughter and I are currently playing through Skull & Shackles a second time, this time with two characters apiece. I certainly agree with the comment above that playing through a second time with different characters can be very fulfilling, and I'd like to add that playing through with different numbers of characters can result in new challenges as well.

I will definitely be looking into the "Season of ___" downloads and the free content I was previously oblivious to.

We played Amiri and Lem on our first run through of RotRL. Those two are still our favorite characters, and the two of us (currently) have the goal of trying to play through each set with that tandem. I think, based on your feedback, that we will be purchasing Mummy's Mask and the barbarian and bard decks in a few months.
