does total defence work against grapple attempts?

General Discussion

Total Defense

You can defend yourself as a standard action. Starting at the beginning of this action, you get a +4 bonus to your Armor Class until the start of your next turn. You can’t combine total defense with other actions that increase your AC, nor can you make attacks of opportunity while benefiting from total defense.

Does it stack with "ac vs. combat maneuvers"?

Not during the grapple but when they first initiate the grapple and you're already using Total Defense.

'ac vs combat maneuvers' is a passive constant bonus(assuming you mean things like some favored class options), and since they don't require an action there is no reason they wouldn't stack.

Absolutely. A character has 3 AC's: Kinetic, Energy and Against Combat Maneuvers. Just because the last is derived in part by one of the first two in no way changes that it is an AC.

So the +4 Stacks onto the AC versus Combat Maneuver value.
