So every starship has a computer equal to 1/2 the starships tier, and computers with an ICM can help with so many checks in space combat of so much depending on what type of ICM you buy.
That being said, aside from what having an ICM can add, what can a starship computer do? You can download an encyclopedia (that's mentioned somewhere) and you can install computer upgrades like an AI or countermeasures, but what do you do with this awesome computer? I mean, if you have a tier 6 ship you have a pretty powerful computer. At tier 20 you have as powerful a computer as we have rules for, just sitting in your ship, practically for free. So what do you use it for?
There are items that you need a tier X computer to use. I don't remember the exact details (so this isn't a spoiler) but I remember their being a data stick in one of the AP's that required a Tier 3 computer to read. I assume that there are likely higher level ones as well.
I think any interaction between computers and items requires computers capable of dealing with items of that item level, but I'm AFB.

Most of the starship computer's processing power is used to run all the systems on the ship: power core, thrusters, life support/artificial gravity, defensive countermeasures, drift engines (if installed), any expansion bays that draw PDUs, any security systems installed, sensors, shields, and weapons. Crew actions are essentially providing specific parameters and customizing how the computer runs the systems to meet the current situation.
The computer can probably also connect to an information network and download various data sets for use away from an information network (as a GM, I'd require the PCs to specify which data sets they download), or be used for anything else a normal computer can be used for.
