Announcing our next Play-by-Post convention:
OutPost I: Back to the Future
EVENT #253109
March 5 - April 30, 2017

Hey Gang!

We’re excited to announce our next play-by-post convention. Although we will have a few newer releases including Starfinder, we will be mainly concentrating for this one on some of the older scenarios that newer players might not have gotten a chance to play. We also will be including Scarab Sages focused scenarios, due to the upcoming retirement of the Scarab Sages Faction. This convention also will be featuring play of the Adventure Card Game scenarios related to the Scarab Sages storyline. In order for your game to count, it must start either on or shortly after March 5, and end on or before April 30.

  • Scenario Support Deadline: January 12, 2018.
  • During this session, we’ll be running the first session of the special Solstice Scar B run by Overseer Granta.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I GM a game on a site that is not Paizo?

Will there be Starfinder games to play?

Yes! We will be featuring both Starfinder Society and PFS games.

Will there be boons for Players and GMs?

Absolutely. This is a convention for which you don’t have to leave home.

Can I participate if I am new to Play-by-Post?

Certainly! Just let your GMs and Players know. They’ll be glad to help.

How many games can I sign up to GM?

Because we want you to be able to pay attention to all your games and show your players a good time, GMs are only allowed two RPG games, including the special, during this convention. This limit of two also includes Starfinder games and spans both the standard and core campaigns. This limit does not include ACG games, if you are one of the GMs running those.

If this will be your first ever time GMing PbP, we strongly recommend that you only do one game at a time. It’s more work than it looks.

How many games can I sign up to play?

Only three RPG games per player, including the Special.

How do I sign up to GM?

There are two places you need to sign up. The first is to fill out a simple google form. Then, go to the games spreadsheet, and put in your name as GM for the table(s) you would like to GM. Please be aware of the limits below on how many tables per GM.

How do I play?

You can sign up to PFS, SFS and ACG games on the games spreadsheet. Put your information in one of the player1 to player6 fields. We require the following information: your main paizo forum handle (player name), your character name and class, your character level (that is total level, over all classes combined) and pfs# (which should include the -n for your character).
If you find you are not able to join a certain game table please remove your information as soon as possible.

How do I sign up to run a table of the ACG?

Right now, this requires special permission from the Venture Captain for ACG, Cartmanbeck. A kickoff event is planned for this summer, after which it will be easier to run a table.

What do I need to play a game of the Adventure Card Game?

You will need to own a Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Character Deck. You can send Cartmanbeck either an image of your receipt for the deck, or a picture of you with the deck, for verification, at cartmanbeck@orgplayonline.com. Once verified, you will be able to use one of the characters from that deck to play.

How many card games can I sign up to play?

To make sure as many people as possible are able to participate, only one card game per player.

Who do I contact with questions?

Please do not try to sign up for the special yet. More details on that will be coming soon.

I signed up to run two tables of my scenario, SFS #1-08: Sanctuary of Drowned Delight!

I've signed up to run "The Beacon Below!"

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Maps Subscriber

Signed up to run one game and play in two others. If we get closer and there aren't enough GM's, I can likely add another scenario.

Thanks for organizing!

Clarification please

Is the grey list at the top the core scenarios or the standard ones

hehe... looks like you are too late. Some of the games are already filled up. I'll wait for the official post though to sign up for some games.

The specials are the blacked out boxes at the bottom (Solstice Scar B). You can go ahead and sign up for others.

Should be a campaign column denoting the type. The grey boxes at the top are indeed core.

Question, do we add games we like to run or have to choose from whats on the spreadsheet to run?

Scarab Sages 5/5 5/5

There's only 1 table for each of the Starfinder scenario's?

I'd like to run a game or 2 of the scenario's I've already played in but those are all being run by a GM already

edit; or what GM Z..D.. asked ;)

Silver Crusade 3/5 5/5 Venture-Lieutenant, Online—PbP

To answer a few questions:

The campaign for each game is listed in column 'E'.

We are asking GMs to choose from the listed games.

There are actually two tables for each of the selected Starfinder scenarios on the schedule.

2/5 5/5 **

There's already (unintentionally, I'm sure) some violations of the 2 table GM limit (the Special counts as 1 of the 2, if I'm reading the instructions correctly). Everyone double check yourself so players don't get left out in the cold if you have to drop a table.

Silver Crusade 3/5 5/5 Venture-Lieutenant, Online—PbP

The first session of the special counts as one of the two; the second session does not.

The card game does also not count towards that maximum.

4/5 ****

Thanks Redelia. Signed up for my two games to run.

Hey everyone, we added a few more Starfinder scenarios to the schedule.

Hi all. I just signed up for a game! Quite happy. I hope it makes. I wanted to let you know that there is an error in the spreadsheet where it tried to count the number of players as it only counts the first 4. I was excited to see that there were only 4 players signed up for 1-45, Delirium's Tangle, but there are actually 5 players signed up so I guess its full. :/

Bret and I were so excited by this that we cancelled our table to play this at Con of the North, and signed up for one of your tables, Kate!

Looks like one of the cell references is messed up. The APL cell has the same error. If you put in $S66 for the #REF!, it should fix it.

Hmm - I'm very excited about this, enough so that I shared it with a friend who's relatively new to PbP. He asked why I was telling him about a convention that ended last April...

Is that why it's Back to the Future?

The above mentioned cell error is fixed. Please let us know anything like this you notice so we can take care of those errors as they occur. Also, if you accidentally do something that messes up the spreadsheet, please, please let us know either here or by PM so we can fix in more easily.

Well, at the risk of coming across as a picker of nits - and since we're being asked to point such things out - I did have a question about some of the tiers. I just signed up to run Voice in the Void, which is listed as tier 3-7. But those early season scenarios often spanned a lot of levels, and it's actually a 1-7, and the same is true for at least a couple of others (0-14 and 0-17).

This may have been done on purpose, to be consistent with the more modern level ranges, but I thought I'd mention it in case it was not intended to be that way.

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 **** Venture-Captain, Minnesota

It was intentional. We listed it as a 3-7 in order to encourage higher tier signups, since a level one cannot play with a level seven by current PFS rules. We have had a lot of requests for adventures to get characters beyond levels 1-5.

So, I understand the reasoning behind all the Scarab Sage scenarios and of course there aren't a ton of Starfinder scenarios out yet so I understand their selection too. But what made you guys select the other scenarios on offer that you did? :)

We also prioritized early season scenarios, since we see those less often. And we included the higher level evergreens to encourage higher level play.

Oh, excellent question! Remember when we did a survey of our player base, Lady Ladile? We got a lot of comments from people who had hardly played any of the adventures from Seasons 0-3. So our initial thought was to offer some of the great Season 0-3 oldies that were stand alone adventures that could be done in a single eight week session, along with a bunch of Season 9 stuff with callbacks to early scenarios. (Top secret: Our first name for this convention was going to be ‘RetroCon’, but then we decided that we might want to do other themes in future years. So we changed it to ‘OutPost!’ This year’s theme? Back to the Future!)

Then the upcoming retirement of the Scarab Sages was announced, and we realized that we needed to make space for all of those, so we reluctantly took out some of the Season Nine content. We wanted to keep down the total number of sessions, so that OutPost does not entirely stomp out regular Play-by-Post games while it was going on. We’re hoping that some GMs will have the bandwidth to still start games for newcomers while the convention goes on, and that we will have fewer blackout periods when there are no new games starting.

Other things we wanted to encourage: helping characters level into higher level play. We got a lot of comments about there being lots of opportunities for lower level scenarios and evergreens, but fewer scenarios to transition people to higher level play. So we wanted a good mix of scenario levels, and to make certain that we had both of the make-your-own dungeon 3-7 evergreens in the mix.

Finally, we have a brand new Venture Captain, Cartmanbeck, who is running the Adventure Card Game (ACG) in Play-by-Post. Since there is a Scarab Sage ACG storyline, we invited him and his box-runners to join us during this convention and offer some of the Scarab Sage ACG adventures!

Finally we want to encourage more higher level Core play — especially stuff to help people get out of low levels. So we wanted to offer some Core adventures to help characters grow!

Here’s our criteria for OutPost I:

  • Great Single Adventures from Seasons 0-3
  • Starfinder — Especially the Newer Scenarios
  • Scarab Sage Scenarios (both ACG + RPG)
  • Core!
  • Higher Level Evergreens
  • No Series
Hope this helps show our thinking process here.

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 **** Venture-Captain, Minnesota

If you are not worried about scenario support, the GM signup window lasts until we run out of slots. Just do one scenario if that is what you feel you have the bandwidth for.

Any chance the top two rows can have their panes frozen on the game sign-up sheet? :)

Jesse, like the wish-granting genie that he is, locked those top two rows in the spread sheet.

Hi, my family and I signed up for a game together, but I wanted to give the GM warning that my kids are quite young. They've played PFS before, and will have help formatting their pbp, but I know some GMs don't have patience for children. Is there a way I can do that, or just by PM? Understandably there's no room for notes on the spreadsheet.

Silver Crusade 3/5 5/5 Venture-Lieutenant, Online—PbP

meloriel, you could try sending the GM a private message.

What game and what GM, Meloriel? And how old is quite young? We’d like to help you and kids have a good game together.

EDIT: Ah, I see! You are in Delirium’s Tangle with Chris Marsh (aka Dungeon Master S.). He is EXCELLENT. I am going to point this post out to him, so that he may contact you.

Hope that your kids enjoy themselves!

If your kids are up for Starfinder, I'll be GMing 1-02 Fugitive on the Red Planet. There is currently one person signed up, so there's plenty of space and I'm happy to run a kid-friendly game. I would also ask what are the kids' age range so that I can try and strike the right tone. If you're interested, just let me know!
