Power: When you defeat a monster on your turn, you may recharge a card (□ then you may draw a card).

Do you have to recharge a card to activate the draw power after feating for the additional effect?

I dont feel like you do, but just checking.

No. In effect, the game asks you:

"You MAY recharge a card. Do you want to do it?"
"No!"
"OK. Now you MAY draw a card. Do you want to do it?"
"Sure!"

If recharge was mandatory, the upgrade would be worded along the lines of "([ ] if you do, you may draw a card.)

Thanks. Thought so, but just testing the waters to see if others interpreted it like i did.

I disagree. I think the draw a card option is contingent on recharging a card.

I read it as Longshot does on this one. The contingency if on the "when", not the first "may". If it was contingent to the recharging, I would expect a sentence like:

When you defeat a monster on your turn, you may recharge a card (□ then if you did you may draw a card).

Hmmm. But usually Paizo chooses to use the fewest words necessary to convey the meaning.

If, having gained the feats, the player can choose any permutation of actions, why doesn't the power read:

Quote:
When you defeat a monster on your turn, you may recharge a card (□ and you may draw a card).

That's the same number of words (then<->and) and then is technically more clear that you can't draw a card then recharge a card.

Re: number of words -- I was contrasting "then" versus Frencois' "then if you did".

It's true that "and" would let you choose the order.

Are you saying Longshot is correct -- that after Imrijka defeats a monster, she can choose to recharge a card or not recharge a card, then she can choose to draw a card (even if she did not recharge a card)?

I agree with Longshot and Frencois here; the way it is currently worded leads me to believe that recharging and drawing are two separate things you can choose to do independently. The "then" is just to hammer down the fact you have to recharge before drawing.

Nah, letting Vic disambiguate.

I have verified the design intent: You may only draw if you recharge first.

This is consistent with the wording as printed once you remove the feat checkbox and parentheses: "When you defeat a monster on your turn, you may recharge a card then you may draw a card."

If the intent had been to make drawing independent of recharging, it would look like this:
"When you defeat a monster on your turn, you may recharge a card. (□ Then you may draw a card)."

What about Olenjack's Guild Leader power: When you succeed at a Diplomacy check, you may draw a card (□ and recharge a card).

And same for his Spider Power: When you succeed at a Perception (□ or Diplomacy) check, you may draw a card (□ and recharge a card).

Is the word "then" in Imrikja's power the distinction?

If you remove the checkbox and parentheses you get
"When you succeed at a Diplomacy check, you may draw a card and recharge a card"

I would read that as you have to either do both (draw and recharge) or neither (decline the "may"). The main difference is not the lack of "then", but the lack of a second "may", meaning once it's ticked the recharge isn't optional (once you've chosen to do the draw at least).

It's a bit odd because it may be a downgrade in many situations, but the wording seems clear enough to me.

(I know you want an official answer, not what I think, but adding my 2c anyway).

I agree with you Irgy, but any power shouldn't be a downgrade. I would like to see them change their stance. You should have the option.
