Community,
I'd like to import the Bulk system of Encumbrance over to Pathfinder.

Has anyone already done this?

Verdant Wheel

Ok I looked it up, looks pretty simple. Does this look alright?:

Clothes
Artisan's Outfit - L Bulk
Cleric's Vestments - 1 Bulk
Cold-Weather Outfit - 2 Bulk
Courtier's Outfit - 1 Bulk
Entertainer's Outfit - negligible Bulk
Explorer's Outfit - 1 Bulk
Monk's Outfit - negligible Bulk
Noble's Outfit - 1 Bulk
Peasant's Outfit - negligible Bulk
Royal Outfit - 2 Bulk
Scholar's Outfit - L Bulk
Traveler's Outfit - 1 Bulk

Armors
Light Armor - 1 Bulk
Medium Armor - 2 Bulk
Heavy Armor - 3 Bulk
Buckler - L Bulk
Light Shield - 1 Bulk
Heavy Shield - 2 Bulk
Tower Shield - 3 Bulk

Weapons
Weapons that weigh less than 1 lb - negligible Bulk
Light and One-handed Weapons - L Bulk
Two-handed Weapons - 1 Bulk
Over-sized Weapons - +1 Bulk per size difference

And now the lingering questions: How much Bulk should these items be?

1) Shortbow
2) Longbow
3) Hand Crossbow
4) Light Crossbow
5) Heavy Crossbow

Cheers!

I don't have anything to contribute, but just wanted to say hi. I'm going to look into this for myself, and wanted to say thanks for doing this legwork.

Rainzax. That looks pretty complete.

Do you think 2 Bulk for Longbow and Heavy Crossbow is too much?

I think it depends. If you want to get grainy you could have it 1 bulk to store it unstrung. But to carry a strung bow around that size is quite awkward.
In terms of the crossbow, I would say maybe 1. They are bad enough compared to bows, just for balance on that side, make it 1. Also it is a wizards staple, so having it heavy would suck.

I literally have no idea anything about starfinder, I was wondering what this bulk system is after reading these posts (I'm assuming it's an alternative way to track encumbrance), could someone explain what it is because atm in games I DM I just ignore weight unless it gets unreasonable, if there were a better system I might use it.

Items are measured in Bulk, given a number to match how heavy it is. Some items are very light and have a bulk of "L" mean they are a Light Bulk, and it takes 10 L to equal one Bulk. Some items have negligible weight and have no Bulk score. For context, a character can carry a number of bulk equal to half of their strength score before suffering penalties. Anything beyond that makes them encumbered, and their max carry capacity in Bulk is their strength score. Also, the game estimates that one Bulk is 5-10 pounds for the purpose of converting unlisted things into your carry capacity.

I'm interested in this, but we're going to have to add some extra rules. For example, unless you modify bulk based on creature size and number of legs, it becomes impossible for a horse to carry a rider plus his equipment into combat. And sadly, adding these exceptions undermines the simplicity that makes the system so appealing.

Edit: Well. After reviewing the way Bulk works, it seems that my robot-riding ratfolk mechanic is going to have some serious problems if he wants his drone to actually move at normal speed. I wonder how I can factor fasting and nudity into his backstory....

Bulk is measured in "-", "L", and using numbers.
"-" means negligible
"L" means 0.1
"1" or "2" means as much
These numbers summed is the Bulk you carry, rounding decimals down

How much Bulk a character can carry is a function of their ST score:

Unencumbered = Bulk up to half ST score (round down)
Encumbered = Bulk up to full ST score
Overburdened = Bulk higher than ST score

So, a ST 10 character can carry up to 5 Bulk without being Encumbered, and can carry 10 Bulk maximum before becoming Overburdened

Encumbered: reduce speed by -10, reduce Max DX to +2, apply -5 penalty to ST/DX skills
Overburdened: reduce speed to 5, reduce Max DX to +0, apply -5 penalty to ST/DX skills

Holy crap, they straight swiped the bulk system that I made like four years ago?!?

I have house rules to make Crossbows cooler, so I'm not worried about combat efficacy here. And wizards can use a light crossbow with a faster fire rate that has a bulk of 1. After reading your response, I think I am decided.

As for horses, I think porting over the Encumbrance rules, which are based on multiplication, will work fine:

Pathfinder Encumbrance Rules wrote:
Quadrupeds can carry heavier loads than bipeds can. Multiply the values corresponding to the creature's Strength score from Table: Carrying Capacity by the appropriate modifier, as follows: Fine ×1/4, Diminutive ×1/2, Tiny ×3/4, Small ×1, Medium ×1-1/2, Large ×3, Huge ×6, Gargantuan ×12, Colossal ×24.

Meaning a Horse, a large ST 16 quadruped, can carry up to 24 Bulk (half of 16x3) without reducing it's speed - up to a 240-pound rider - or up to 48 Bulk maximum - a 480-pound rider, or two 240-pound riders, etc.

That seems realistic enough for me to go with.

Another Idea:

Backpacks
You may add your CON bonus to your maximum Bulk score.
A ST 13, CON 15 character can carry 6 Bulk Unencumbered, or 15 Bulk maximum

Moderators: Why was this moved from Conversions to Advice?

It's really more Homebrew than anything else!

So that I, who usually looks at the advice forum more than any other, could find out about this interesting system that I'm never gonna use. I mean, that's pretty much the only reason I'm even on these forums. For advice I'll never use and occasionally, very rarely, advice I actually will.
