I'm currently a level 5 sorcerer.
I'm deciding to either magical lineage cone of cold OR metamagic master fireball + take desperate focus (which is a magic trait, which magical lineage is as well so I cant take both I believe) (+2 to concentration checks)
We are doing a campaign that will go to level 20 - savage tide.
thanks!

Cone of cold's only real plus is that it starts with a non-fire damage type. That's not worth two levels; since D&D 3.0 that's been valued at about one spell level, but cone of cold never got updated to match. Of those two taking fireball is a no-brainer.
If you're considering using metamagic rods at all you want a spell of 3rd level or lower. Some other useful blasting spells: battering blast for force damage, mainly useful from caster level 10; or burning arc, mainly because it's just 2nd level but looks almost like a 3rd level spell; or scorching ray because touch attacks can be more reliable than saves; or even diamond spray for non-energy blasting.
