That said, my gm allowed my mechanic to make his Laser rifle at level 1 before play. Since it costs the exact same as purchasing the weapon and only gives it a little more durability and resilience he saw no problem with it. And it only takes 4 hours so time is not an issue either.

Rules wise there is nothing that addresses this specific question. It will be a GM ruling but I don't personally see any reason a GM would not allow it.
Ravingdork wrote:In Pathfinder, you could use your starting funds to craft your gear. Is this still the case in Starfinder?

Nor is there a rule guaranteeing this ability - your mileage may vary depending on the GM and the game being run.

Personally I'd most likely allow it. Unlike Pathfinder there's no WBL advantage to crafting your own gear, and you're limited to making gear of your own level or lower (max item level = rank in crafting skill). The added durability and the quicker repair speed strike me as fairly minor perks that do not seem out of line with the investment cost of putting ranks in the skill.

The only thing I may veto would be making very rare or highly specific equipment that the PC doesn't have a logical reason to access.
As far as I know there's no ruling prohibiting you from crafting your gear before the campaign starts in Starfinder. I assumed it was always just an assumption and a power grab by players. I fully expect the same assumption to remain true for Starfinder, though the benefit (and cost of doing so) is much less.

I understand the logic behind it as you spent the resources to be able to do such and it would have been to your benefit to do so, and you had effectively near unlimited back story time to do it so why would you have done it.

But I didn't think it was ever written down as a rule that you could. The closest thing I remember is the GMs Guide (or maybe ultimate campaign) recommended that you give players about +25% to starting wealth per crafting feat. Generally a far cry from the 75% or more I generally saw players try to leverage Craft Wondrous Items too. Of course that is my play experience.
Was this ever written into the Pathfinder rules? So it seems like a reasonable perk for 1st level. Less valuable in the long run, but mundane gear is can make or break a group at low level. My gut say to not allow it, but it’s probably not that big a deal.
As we know, non adventuring skills like this are less valuable than others. So it seems like a reasonable perk for 1st level.
