I need the monster from Tremors

I'm adapting the Lamentations of the Flame Princess adventure Tales of the Scarecrow into Pathfinder, and I'm wondering if any of the Bestiaries or other monster sources already has an underground dwelling carnivore that shoots tentacles up to eat creatures on the surface.

Or some monster I could easily retrofit to do just that.

Because of laziness and so much prep to do, I'd much rather use something already created than start from scratch.

The point of this encounter is more, This is overwhelming and terrifying and let's run before we're eaten! instead of Let's just stand here and battle this level-appropriate encounter.

Take a Purple Worm, make it Large, and give it a grapple attack with impressive reach. It might also just pop up beneath them and get a free shot at swallow whole.

Also consider the telegram...er Landshark (Bulette).
I suppose if you feeling mean...add a touch tentacle attack from Carrion Crawlers. Now you're grabbed, paralyzed and being swallowed whole.

It doesn't have tentacles, but the bulette does behave in the way that you want.

Thanks, everyone. The carrion crawler idea was particularly interesting to me, as these characters will be 1st-3rd level and I want to make sure I don't one-shot kill anybody.

(The stats in the module, for Lamentations of the Flame Princess, a retro-Red box clone, are the creature's tentacles attack as 5HD (but only one tentacle can attack/round), doing d8 damage, and can extend up to 100' above the ground to grab flying creatures. The creature itself is immobile and buried and has 1000HD.)

My only worry about this for Pathfinder is that a +5 atk bonus and d8 damage might not be sufficiently terrifying even for 1st-3rd level characters.

I am surprised that Paizo hasn't created a specific homage to Tremors in one of the Bestiaries . . .

Fat Goblin Games adapted the graboids for their Monster Movie Matinee book. The "snatchoids" are presented as a CR 5 monster. Well worth picking up!

Hey, thanks for the find, Brother Fen. I'm going to purchase that right now.

No problem. It's a great book, and with the sale going on one can pick up the printed softcover and the pdf for $7.

The snatchoids as presented would be too difficult for a level one encounter, that is, unless the players were meant to flee. A Young Template could be applied to bring the difficulty down a bit, making an early encounter more feasible.

Just make sure the PCs have an expendable resource or two nearby for the snatchoids to grab in order to give the players a chance to run away. It's not fun to accidentally kill a character, but it is a lot of fun to almost kill one and make them run for their lives.

After they've leveled up a bit, they can encounter the young snatchoids and fight them. Finally, at 3rd level they could get their revenge by fighting a full CR 5 snatchoid or two!
