Item Crafting Rules?

Homebrew

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Ok so i was wondering and the only reason that i ask this
is due to not being able to find a solid thread that help in any fashion.

One of my players decided to make an item creation specialist, spec'd his character to be optimized
so that he has +8 in computers and engineering, +7 in mysticism so that he would have all his bases covered.

Then after sitting down for almost an hour trying to figure out how crafting worked...
i found that all you need was ranks = to that of the item lvl you want to make (no DCs required)
and the materials equal to the cast of the item.

---------------------------------
so i put this idea forward to you
---------------------------------

Item craft DC = 10 + (item lvl * 2)

I know that it makes a lvl 20 items DC 50 but this is how i justify it. (with some of my own additional ideas

a character at lvl 20 how is crafting has 20 ranks in appropriate skill, is specialized and has it as a class skill giving +3,
has 20 in appropriate attribute score giving a +5 bonus, has skill focus +3 gains assistance from another character with appropriate skill +2,
has access to Advanced high lvl workshop +5 max (varying in price) for a total bonus +38 to skill check against DC 50 needing a min 12 on the dice.

---------------------------------
The Workshop
---------------------------------

I understand that the workshop on a ship only provides 1/2 time reduction in speed to craft, though my player and myslef
agreed to a cost to the ship at:

rank 1 (bonus +1) 1 PCU and 1 BP
rank 2 (bonus +2) 3 PCU and 3 BP
rank 3 (bonus +3) 6 PCU and 6 BP
rank 4 (bonus +4) 10 PCU and 10 BP
rank 5 (bonus +5) 15 PCU and 15 BP

i need help maybe with this one as it might not be balanced for cost
(maybe they need to spend credits as well as build points??
and only achievable when they reach certain ship tiers.)

---------------------------------
Assistance
---------------------------------

The assisting character must make a DC = 10 + 1/2 the DC
(they are unable to gain the workshop bonus or the assistance bonus)
this would then mean that the assistant would require to be lvl 10 with optimized skills and attributes meaning they would need a 14 or better,
or a higher lvl then 10.

---------------------------------
Crafting time
---------------------------------

last thing i promise.

so the 4hr crafting time....

i came up with this

time = 4hrs + item level (max 8hrs per day)
it makes it so that first time crafting goes into writing the program for the UPB to know what and where they belong in the building plan.
when you make something a second time it goes back to the default time as per the CRB.

---------------------------------

i hope that i can get some great feed back from my fellow GMs as i'm really wanting to work on the crafting system to help it flow within my game.

I think they simplified the crafting rules to prevent players from stacking bonuses so the could auto pass a DC 40 crafting check. By voluntarily increasing DC you could craft an item faster, at DC 40 it would be 4x as fast. The Pathfinder crafting method would have also allowed players access to better gear at lower cost.

Thanks Lane_S,

i can get behind simplified crafting however in the CRB page 142-144 engineering and mysticism
they have DCs for identifying and repair of weapons and armor at 15+1-1/2*item lvl which would bring the total DC to 45 for a lvl 20 item.

The only way to speed up time is to have a 5 ranks higher to cut the time in half and if your 10 ranks higher to a quarter down to 1 hour,
as per the CRB page 235 which makes a lvl 20 item unable to have its time reduced, so some of the conditions that are already set are fine.

you can reduce the cost of crafting an item by 10% for salvaging a similar item, and having custom crafted items have there own benifit
like if your repairing an item you made its can be done in half the time and HPs hardness and saving throw for an item you crafted is treated as being 2 lvl higher
making them more durable and better then a store brought mass produced piece of s**t

what are your thoughts though on the DC i've set, the work shop bonus, assistance and time for first time crafting an item,
really i just want to get an idea if they are fair and reasonable for players.

Don't have the time to number crunch right now but will give some reference.

Item DC
Armor 10+ bonus
Long Bow 12
cross bow 15
Compromise bow 15+ (2 x bonus)
Martial weapon 15
exotic weapon 18
masterwork 20
magic item 5+ caster level

I have heard that 5 ranks (or 5th level) is assumed to me a master craftsman. This gives them about 50% chance to craft a masterwork weapon. Other weapons they will almost never ruin materials, A first level character has about 50% chance of passing a DC 15 check. For Starfinder I would consider items above your level to be bonus items like masterwork or composite bows.

Based on this I would say your craft DC should be about 15+ item level when the item is less than or equal to your level. If item is a higher level I would go 15 + item level + (item level - character level). This makes each item level above your own count as +2 to DC. For armor I would replace item level with KAC and add +1 per upgrade slot.
