Yeah...
I haven't had the opportunity to read the AA, but I'm going to echo the concern that this feels like it could easily devolve into being SF's version of Kenders, which is not great.
The kind of concept that can be fun on paper but inevitably ends up being badly, badly disruptive. And beyond annoying.

Am I/are we overreacting ?

They don't randomly redistribute items.
Skittermancers are just helpful until the task at hand is completed and then wander off in search of more beings that need their help.


I didn't read them as wondering off, but rather if they find someone else on their way they will stop and help them.

The sentence you're referring to is part of a larger setup.

The full meaning is that if you give a skittermander a task with a definitive ending that they will most likely not return to you because they'll probably run into someone else to help.

This means that they will complete tasks, but as soon as it's finished they'll just go do their own thing again, which is to help others, but not necesarily you because they run into others that can use help before you.

Yeah, they're not kender. They're super helpful, yes. They don't have a concept of long-term leadership.

So... If you're "in-charge" then, once the mission is over, they no longer accept your leadership.

Hmm, maybe not as long as the goals are clearly defined and end in “return to us/base”. Once they’re back at HQ they’ve rendered their “help” and will probably wander off... but being in Starfinder HQ they’re gonna wander right into someone else who needs “help”.

Just make the request for help open ended.

"Please help us explore the galaxy." can keep a skittermander on your team until he dies (or until there is no more galaxy left to explore).

It could, but it could also free it from any obligation as soon as it explores any portion of the Galaxy. If my wife asks me to please help her get dressed I feel fine walking away once I've zipped her dress, I don't expect to follow her around in perpetuity for all future wardrobe changes/malfunctions.

Vesk Field Agent: "Sorry, sir."

Vesk Commander: {exasperated} "What exactly did you say to those skittermanders?"

VFA: "We needed to locate and question that red-furred individual who was last seen with the shirren suspect. So I asked the skittermander villagers if they could help me quickly locate any rouge ones for questioning."

VC: {looks around at hundreds of gathered helpful skittermanders, all with freshly-dyed red fur} "Cos' damn it."

Skittermanders are the objectively best race at hugging, after all.

They have a +2 bonus to grapple checks.

I can see a bit of a connection. It's not as likely to get you into trouble, but they do encourage certain quirky, values-dissonant behavoir that can just get weird. Now every race can provide a bit of this, but quirky behavoir, with the information as we have it now, is essentially the entire identity of the skittermander race.

Now PCs aren't bound by typically behavoirs of a race, and that's what I would impress upon any of my players wanting to run a skittermander. If someone comes to me with an uncharacteristically self-serving skittermander mechanic who didn't mesh with skittermander society because he thought they were all a bunch of rubes with no ambition, great. If they're going to play a skittermander as a "I'll help you do everything and I'll get in the way because it's funny" to essentially get a bunch of laughs, I feel like its breaking the mood and verisimilitude of a game that is largely about roleplaying heroes, and it's not going to swing at my table.

Essentially, the 2-dimensional personality for this race, I think, is too great a trap for me to not step in an say if "If you want to play this race, you need to show me that there is more to your character's personality than "lol I'm a skittermander."


Except I actually just changed my mind after one of my players pitched me a skittermander character whos tenure with the party is going to be the most recent in a long line of absurd attempts at her trying to be helpful to people that started out a couple months ago with a mechanic in the Veskarium asking her to pass him his spanner. Now she's on Absalom Station, and the mechanic is still waiting on his spanner.

But this is can easily be resolved by just making your player give them a backstory for motivation like you said. It's that simple. A good example is my GM made me do it for the skittermander operative I'm using in his homebrew. He became an operative because they train in a variety of skills which will help him aid as many people in as many situations as possible. But now he has his own goal because after operating within the Veskarium at various levels, he sees how inefficient it is without the skittermanders in all of the controlling clerical positions so his thought process now is that to help the Veskarium be the best and most efficient that it can be, the skittermanders need to be in charge instead of the Vesk and is working towards that goal.


Slightly OT, but I can't wait to see the miniatures for these.

They're fun in the same way space goblins are - though clearly for different reasons.

Hard to do since Space Goblins steal ships, build ramshackle ships, and are a nuisance.

I imagine each of them have their own "talents" to aid in the task at hand. Whatever each member of your crew tries to do during your voyage, there's a Skittermander offering a few hands to help, wanted or not. Whether it's holding the engineer's tools for her, assisting the cook with seasonings for meals (because nothing goes better in oatmeal than curry powder!), or finding this great shortcut to Absalom Station, they will have no idea how you ever got along without them.


Billantrix' spin on on Skittermanders is that their company is agreeable in small doses. She has four or five who are regular parts of the staff of her spacefaring lair (technically they're "on loan" from a Vesk diplomat she consults from time to time, but for some reason he's never bothered to ask for them back)), including a couple who have become quite proficient at preparing the large beasts that feature at her feasts.

Skittermander Mechanic with a drone built to look like a Skittermander - 'cause the mechanic is trying to replace his lost brother that a Vesk ship landed on during the conquest... He's morose and given to fits of rage... the Dark Skittermander.

The Kickstarter your quoting above is from 2017 pretty sure it's the one that crashed and burned. Looks like a different company picked it up more info here. You might want to read the comments there before buying.

Deep Cuts makes a set of two skittermander minis (looks like Eshki in a suit, and a nufriend in a military uniform) that aren't too horrible-looking.
