My grandfather died at the age of 67 when I was 9. I have great memories of him, but still, limited. My cousin was only about 4 or 5 at the time, and he has very few memories of him. Makes me feel really bad for his granddaughter, as she may not ever really know who he was outside of "this famous person was related to me" and stories told to her by relatives.

I hadn't heard this. I was just reading an interview with him about Prince's performance on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." Petty had some interesting things to say in "The Defiant Ones" as well about Jimmy Iovine. Wasn't huge on his music, though I remember "Free Fallin" constantly playing on MTV as a kid.

Wait, Petty may not be dead (yet)?! WTF?!
For f$+$s sake, he's too young at 66. Please let him live to spend some time with his granddaughter.

No, if he was found after an extended period with no heartbeat, then what we think of as Tom Petty is already gone, even if his body is hanging around.
I shouldn't have posted and gotten anyone's hopes up. I am so sorry.
I am so sick of this s#~$ty day in a crappy year.

Best tribute I ever hear about Tom Petty's music is that it's like Coke, great drink for any meal.
House chores on a Saturday -- Tom Petty is perfect background music.
Stadium anthem rock -- Tom Petty is a perfect arena rocker.
Hanging out with your buddies at a sports bar -- Tom Petty's music is great in the jukebox.
Super Bowl halftime, elevator music, old, young, Western, Eastern....
On a date, at work, at a party -- whatever the occasion, wherever the venue, one song or hours of music -- Tom Petty fits.

Hey, you didn't do any wrong.
Peace to him and all his loved ones.

Yeah, apparently the LAPD posted some information last night that implied that he was dead, but retracted it this morning. (we're talking Eastern Standard Time).
The retractions were in the news in early afternoon (1 or 2 pm) but everything went silent until just a few minutes ago when the BBC posted a new article. They'd already done one article and a retraction.
The band manager has posted that he has died.

Petty was taken off of life support at a Los Angeles-area hospital on 2 October 2017, after being hospitalized following a heart attack. The gossip site TMZ stated that life support was pulled for Petty because of a lack of brain activity. Rolling Stone reported that his death later that day was confirmed through longtime Heartbreakers manager Tony Dimitriades:
On behalf of the Tom Petty family we are devastated to announce the untimely death of of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty. He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40pm PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends….
There was some initial confusion about his condition following news of his collapse. Following reports of his death, the Los Angeles Police Department said on Twitter that earlier in the day, “initial information was inadvertantly [sic] provided to some media sources,” adding that it was not investigating Petty’s hospitalization. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and the hospital declined to comment, and an e-mail to his publicist was not immediately returned.

For me, Tom Petty, like Prince, was part of the soundtrack of my childhood, and his music meant a great deal to me. I hope his family can find comfort in this time.
Saddest thing about it is that in December, apparently he noted in an interview this concert season was likely his last, because he wanted more time with his grandchildren -- and they just wrapped last week.

I think I first got into Tom Petty at the beginning of high school, and he (and the Heartbreakers) were always a constant on the radio and my MP3 player. When he joined the Traveling Wilbury's, I got my mom interested in them as she was always a Roy Orbison fan. I loaned her my CDs with Petty, Dylan, and Harrison, and I explored Orbison a bit myself.
He always seemed like a nice, decent kid from Gainesville who made it big to escape, but didn't forget his hometown or state. I liked that many of his songs were written from a female perspective, and I appreciate his support of Planned Parenthood.
Requiescat in pace, Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr. Hope you get to jam with Nelson and Lefty now.

Man that really does suck.
Always liked his music.
