TMZ is reporting that Tom Petty was found unconscious and in full cardiac arrest. They're also saying he's been taken off of life support. Have seen no other independent reports.
ETA: CBS News confirms that he has died.
Damn.

Here's a video of him playing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" for the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction of George Harrison, along with Prince, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne, and others. Like Prince, he left us too soon, but he also left us a whole lot of excellent music.

CBS said they got it from LAPD, but that LAPD is now unable to confirm it. (CBS' initial report--and that they were quoting someone other than TMZ--was what convinced me; I wasn't going to trust TMZ without confirmation, which was why I didn't make the subject of this thread something like "RIP Tom Petty.")

Apparently he passed a few hours ago, 8:40pm PST.... RIP Tom
Rock icon and a key contributor to the soundtrack for my life (and for many others).

Thanks for everything, Tom Petty.
Especially that song, right there.

Mourning Midnight Musical Interlude
I heard that he died at work, come home and find out it's up in the air.
Anyway, this is nowhere near my favorite Tom Petty song, but it was the first one I remember, mostly because it was one of the first videos I ever saw on MTV. I guess I was probably eight, and either cable hadn't come to New Hampshire yet or, more likely, my parents just didn't want to pay for it, but either way I remember seeing this at my aunt's house in western Massachusetts and it freaked me out. The Alice in Wonderland imagery, the sitar, when the female actress gets turned into a cake and then eaten. Blew my eight-year-old mind.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were, imho, the last great American classic rock band.
