Is the Occultist the new version of Incarnum?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I Was reading through Akashic Mysteries the other day when I was struck by this thought: is the Occultist, from Occult Adventures, supposed to be Pathfinder's version of the 3.5 Incarnum system, at least mechanics wise. People compare the Kineticist to Benders all the time even though it's more like the old 3.5 Warlock in terms of game mechanics.

The Occultist has a resource of magical energy that they infuse into various items that grant passive and active bonuses, this sound a lot like incarnum except for the items being physical objects instead of magical constructs. Am I talking out of my ass here or is there a connection to be made?

The occultist, from where I'm reading anyway, represents a particular archetype of magic practitioner not really represented by wizards and such--those who delve into the intersection of spiritualism, magic, and the material world, featured in occult and semi-occult works ranging from Lovecraft and Derleth to the likes of Jim Butcher. I have no idea what 3.5 did for the same sort of thing nor what the heck an Incarnum is, but the occultist seems to enable that sort of character well enough.

Dreamscarred Press reworked Incarnum with their Akashic series of publications. I don't know how the Occultist stacks up against that.

It does have some similarities. Mechanically, the occultist does seem to be a mix between "Incarnum" + paizo's favourite "depleting points" + the "occultist" class from d20 modern.

Says the guy with the Mavaro avatar. He would never be biased though. : )

I like the Occultist quite a bit in truth though I never did think of connecting it to the old Incarnum or the current Akashic stuff.

For the most part yes, the Occultists main mechanic is extremely similar to the Incarnum.

Both have specific slots, you invest points into those slots for greater power of a specific ability.

The Kineticist is extremely similar to the the 3.5 Warlock.

The Medium is very similar to the Binder.

If it works.

Scarab Sages

I don't care for the analogy - yes, the Mental Focus and Essentia mechanics look and work similarly, but the fundamental concepts are very different.

As has been said, Akashic Mysteries is far more faithful to the spirit of Incarnum.
