Freeport: The City of Adventure using 5E

5th Edition (And Beyond)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I've been a huge fan of Green Ronin's Freeport setting ever since the very first adventure, Death in Freeport, in 2000. I've run Freeport campaigns in v.3.0, v.3.5, and Pathfinder, I've compiled unofficial fan errata for the setting, and along the way I've become an official contributor to the setting.

Ever since my Pathfinder Freeport campaign wrapped last year, I've been pondering using D&D Fifth Edition for my next Freeport game--though I have no idea yet when that will be (my plate's pretty full running my "Time of the Tarrasque" game, plus occasional D&D games for my kids). However, I have taken the time to write a number of columns for my "Studded Plate" blog exploring the combination of Freeport with 5E. This week's, about The Book of the Righteous, is probably my most ambitious yet.

I've decided to start a thread here (separate from my "Studded Plate" thread in Gamer Talk) as a way to highlight these Freeport 5E columns, and see what discussion I can start with others interested in the setting.

Here is the list to date:

My blog for this week, 2017 in Review, gives an overview of ongoing series of articles on my blog, including Freeport 5E. Of most interest to Freeport fans, I've recently acquired Volo's Guide to Monsters and Xanathar's Guide to Everything, so will be writing columns about using them with Freeport over the next few months.

Volo's Guide to Monsters and Freeport: More commentary on using D&D 5E sourcebooks with the City of Adventure.

Xanathar's Guide and Freeport, Part 1: Subclasses: Part 1 of 2 of my look at using Xanathar's Guide to Everything with Freeport.

Xanathar's Guide and Freeport, Part 2: Everything Else: The conclusion of my discussion of using Xanathar's Guide to Everything with Freeport.

Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide and Freeport: How to use this tome of Realms lore with Freeport, with or without the Realms.

Liberty's Edge

did you do the serpent folk(?) in 5e? Or the Freeport Trilogy?

Plane Shift and Freeport, Part 2: Ixalan: More discussion about mixing the streams of D&D, Magic: The Gathering, and Freeport.

I have not yet converted the serpent people or any Freeport adventures. I plan to do a lot of that eventually, for a future home game. When I do, I'll be sure to blog about it!

I've been away from Freeport for a long time, but these articles are intriguing. Has Green Ronin made any 5e-related announcements with regards to Freeport?

Thanks for all your hard work on this!

They have not announced any such plans. The last time I saw any reply to that question on their forums or social media (some time ago now), they said that they were focusing on supporting the Pathfinder Freeport book, but might consider other systems in time.

Thanks! My next Freeport campaign is going to be either 5E or Fantasy AGE, so it's both game prep and writing practice. :)

The Book of the Righteous: Cults of Freeport: The strengths of both these books lie in their depth of detail about the gods and their respective churches and cults. Try them together in your 5E Freeport game!

Plundering 5E Adventures for Freeport: A brief look at other sources to mine for Freeport campaigns.

Mordenkainen's Book of Foes and Freeport: Thoughts on combining the archmage's tome with the City of Adventure.

Unearthed Arcana and Freeport, Part 8: More races and subclasses, and how they might fit into the City of Adventure.

Plane Shift and Freeport, Part 3: Dominaria: More Magic, more Freeport!

Unearthed Arcana and Freeport, Part 9: More Magic, Eberron, and the Sea

Converting Death in Freeport to Fifth Edition: Quick-and-dirty conversion notes for the original Freeport adventure.

Unearthed Arcana and Freeport, Part 10: Sidekicks and Artificers.

Unearthed Arcana and Freeport, Part 11: Artificer 4.0 plus Even More Subclasses: Short reviews of UA articles from May, August, and September.

Unearthed Arcana and Freeport, Part 12: Even  More Subclasses, Continued!: The rest of the current round of new playtest subclasses brings us to one new option per core class.

Unearthed Arcana and Freeport, Part 13: Class Feature Variants: A brief overview of this month's hefty release.

Unearthed Arcana and Freeport, Part 14: Another Slew of Subclasses: Capsule reviews of "Unearthed Arcana" articles from November 2019-March 2020.

Strongholds & Followers and Freeport: Mixing Matt Colville's high-level leadership rules (and many weird new monsters) with the City of Adventure.

Unearthed Arcana and Freeport, Part 15--and official 5E Freeport news!: A few new subclasses and feats--and a link to Green Ronin's first official 5E Freeport release!

That last part is more of a footnote, really, but I felt that it needed to be mentioned on my blog ASAP. Green Ronin has released Death in Freeport updated to the 5E rules. Long-time readers of my blog may remember my quick and dirty, unplaytested, conversion of Death to 5E. Now that there is an official conversion, I will definitely be trying to run this adventure again someday soon!

Finally, after a half-year's hiatus, I finally posted another "Freeport and 5E" article to my blog last month: Ghosts of Saltmarsh and Freeport

After yet another long hiatus, there is more Freeport content on my blog!

Tasha's Cauldron and Freeport, Part 1: Character Options
Tasha's Cauldron and Freeport, Part 2: Everything Else

Unearthed Arcana and Freeport, Part 16: In Tasha's Wake

The Book of Lairs and Freeport: A 3PP bestiary for 5E (and its tie-in adventure anthology).

This is an impressive listing and work! Thank you for all the info.
