Someone I know is thinking of trying out PFS with a cleric character. They're going to be using the Core material from the PRD if so. I was just looking at the cleric class description so I can help them out if they decide to take the plunge, and came across something I'm not sure how they should handle.
Clerics have to either select a deity and pick from the deity's domains, or have no specific deity and pick "two domains to represent her spiritual inclinations and abilities (subject to GM approval)". There are no deities in the Core section of the PRD, and with the possibility of GM rulings varying... how is this handled? Will they have to buy a copy of the Core Rulebook in order to be able to use one of the deities in that in play? Are invented deities permitted? Is there something I'm completely misunderstanding?

OP guide p 24.
Characters with any number of levels in any of these classes must select a deity.
• Clerics, inquisitors, paladins, and warpriests
etc.
Characters can worship any deity listed in the table of gods in the Core Rulebook, (Other non-core sources)
Also p5:
RESOURCES
The Roleplaying Guild requires all members to have the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook
---
Obviously nobody expects or requires you to have a Core Rulebook to try the game out. The rules do assume that you at least have access to one and will pick one up eventually.

This is why a player needs to have the the book or a PDF of the book.
There is a table in the book that is not shown on the PRD that lists the gods and their domains. The table is only in the book/PDF.
If you search the forums, there is a number of threads that give information about the gods, core and non-core.
