Pathfinder Tales Boons - How do these typically work?

Pathfinder Society

So I'm quite new to PFS, but own many of the Pathfinder Tales books (mostly on audible). I have only just come across the chronicle sheets for owning the books, but honestly don't have any idea how this is supposed to work.

So I imagine I need to print out the chronicle sheet, and show proof of ownership of the book (in this case, my audible library I'd imagine). Does the GM then initial the sheet so I can add it to a specific character's folio (complete with a chronicle # and carrying forward gp, prestige, and other goodies)? Once there, it means I can use the boons it provides, and/or purchase the items it describes? Do people simply take the sheets to a session, and have the GM go ahead and initial all they own the book for, and then try to remember that they might have a boon for something when a situation comes up?

Just trying to get an idea how it works, because I have not seen it happen at any of the (admittedly very few) sessions I've been involved in.

Thank You for your Guidance orison...

I was wondering the same thing. I have some of the books on audible and haven't applied the boons yet. I have the added question about playing on pbp. That's pretty much exclusively what I play. How do I "show" my GM that I have the book.

Considering in person most GM's seem to accept a printout of your library, perhaps you can email a pdf printout of your library to your online GM.

There are a couple of different types of Tales boons:

* some Tales boons are tied to a single book (Blood of the City, for example) where you get certain benefit from the one book boon.

* and some are made for multiple books (Liar's Blade, Pirate's Honor, The Wizard's Mask, and King of Chaos) where you get an additional benefit for owning all four books on top of the individual benefits from each book.

In both cases you bring the book(s)/proof of purchase to a GM and have them sign off on the boon sheet(s) as proof that ownership has been verified.

You then apply the boon to the desired PC as you would a chronicle, filling in the information that carries over from the chronicle sheet prior to it and numbering it as you would any other sheet in that PC's play history.

The sheet should then be carried along with that PCs chronicles to each game, and the boon will be marked/initialed as needed as it is used over time.

Hopefully that makes sense.

For online play you can produce your Audible receipt/personally identifiable Audible library, proof of purchase from Paizo, personalized Paizo library listing, itemized Amazon/Store receipt, or whatever else the GM is comfortable accepting as proof of purchase.

My understanding from some previous threads was that the original (single book) boons could be applied to more than one character, and that the usual protocol was to have a GM verify that you have the book, fill out a Chronicle for it, and then the player could photocopy that and apply it to multiple characters.

Some Tales boons are available to all your PCs, and others can be applied to one PC only. You usually find that information in each of the boons sanctioning document.

How is that information reflected on the chronicle sheet? I looked at I think all of the tales chronicle sheets and I'm not sure it was clear on any of them if a player could use them multiple times for different characters or not.

Or more specifically, we'll use Volume V as an example. It says that you can apply each one once per player for any of his or her characters, then if all four are initialed, the prolific reader boon can be applied to any one of his or her characters.

The issue is, if this is a chronicle sheet, then it should be recorded in a specific character's record, so how is one able to use a different boon from this sheet on different characters?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

For the individual Tales boons that can be applied to multiple PCs you simply make multiple copies and apply the individual copies to the PCs. So each PC would apply it's own copy.

The Pathfinder Tales, Vol 4/5/6/7 boons are only a wee bit different.

Those you get initialed as you use the individual one-time use boons, without assigning the sheet to a PC, at first - then when it comes time to assign the Prolific Reader boon to the one chosen PC you then would then assign the sheet as you would a chronicle sheet to that specific PC, giving it a chronicle # and filling out the PC info, et cetera.

It's explained in the "HOW TO USE" section of the sanctioning document.
