Sandpoint Guard

Rise of the Runelords

Hellow, my dearest tall people!

I'm here again to seek for advice. The issue i've this time is with Sandpoint's guard. I'm running the campaing and Belor Hemlock is about to come back to the town with reinforments.

I was wondering...How many guards do you think he should bring to Saindpoint? I'm totally lost with the number of soldiers the town should have, mostly because i dont want to make it seem stupid if Belor dont take the guys and blow up Twistletop with the info the PJ's have gathered.

Well...thats all!!!, thank you, tall people!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Traditionally a town would have 1 guard for every 150 citizens (Google medieval demographic calculator for explanation) I usually make it 1/100 to account for things like undead, etc. Reinforcements are are 50% of sandpoints usual guard complement, in order to bring it back up to strength, that would only be a 6 person squad, with Sandpoint generally having a guard force of maybe 12-15 usually.

I didnt think about the demographic point of view!!! Man, you really helped me a lot, thank you very much!

i give you a like, even if you are one of those tall people

In both times I've run it, I've had Hemlock come back with about 6 extra guards from Magnimar and complaining about how that seems insufficient to stave off a full-scale goblin assault on the town, but it's the most he could convince Lord-Mayor Grobarus to spare. Perfect time to foreshadow the Lord-Mayor's greed and self-interest ahead of Chapter 2.

In my campaign, I had Hemlock return with a contingent of 10 guards and a "second in command." That 2nd was under orders from Magnimar to subvert control from Hemlock, and start making political moves to allow Magnimar government control over Sandpoint. The PCs weren't keen on this and allow me to have them scratch the surface of the conflict between the 2 locations.
