Rachel was my first psi X-men and I am a big fan. Rereading Excalibur is always a favourite^^.So yes getting her back in the game would be great, too.

But with the one-shot, it seems they have a plan for her. Problem is that could mean anything.

Well I honestly can say if you want a great horror super hero comic, Immortal Hulk is hitting all the right notes. Also I think I've figured out the real name for The One Below All. If you read the title and then google it...well you'd get.

Thanks I will look into it.

It hasn't always hit the notes, low, but honestly I feel it's the best since Greg Pak was writing it.

Am I the only person surprised that Alicia Masters

Spoiler:
has a magic-clay puppet of her father, or that she was both able and willing to manipulate him in his hermetically-sealed cell?

(Incidentally: "pulverizer"? We haven't yet met that character.)

Chris,

Honestly after all the other stuff that's happened in Marvel, no. No I am not.

Also Pulverizer isn't a character that I'm aware of. But this soon to be released issue of Domino WILL introduce Atlas Bear.

While I've got nothing against this new character, sight unseen, if there was a demographic box that needed ticking off, Misty Knight and Tilda Johnson were available, and in the right 'power level,' just off the top of my head. (And more obscure choices, like Sun Girl or Gorilla Girl.)

Gosh, so many B-D list heroines available, come to think of it, if Domino wants to make a more 'street-level' take on A-Force. Finesse, Songbird, Elsa Bloodstone, Cassie Lang/Stature/Stinger, White Tiger (Ava or Angela), various Spider-Women and Girls and Silk, etc. Various depowered or possibly dead characters like Wind-Dancer/Sofia and Yellowjacket 2/Rita.

Maybe the new character has a specific story that goes well with the story Gail wants to tell, and it has nothing to do with tokenism? Especially since generally speaking she is a writer who is excellent at picking out and designing rosters for team books, and giving characters real human reasons for being there beyond "box-ticking"?

Not to mention, it's kind of disgusting and hateful to imply there are "enough" black female characters and shouldn't be more (not to mention that they should only exist to "tick boxes"), which maybe you didn't intend, but sure as hell sounds like what you are saying.

It's a huge and rare honor for a major comic book editorial team to allow a writer to make a new character--especially indeed with so many existing characters out there. If Marvel has good faith in Gail for letting her introduce a new character, then so do I.

While I'd also love to see Gail write any number of the characters you list, they also may be taken/involved in other storylines.

Freehold: she was already writing Domino and this "miniseries" is just rounding out the end of this monthly, turning the existing cast into a proper team book. Basically she was already writing Domino as Marvel's "Birds of Prey" so they just decided to make it be that thing.

It's odd how rarely I hear fans lament about why a new male hero or villain is being introduced, when the Big Two are neck deep in existing male characters that are available. Huh, weird.

From reading the behinds the scenes stuff (the "sausage making") in the comics industry, the more popular writers and editors are able to put holds/hands off signs on certain characters they plan to use. And with Misty and Tilda/Nightshade having appeared in the last season of Netflix's Luke Cage, it possible that Marvel corporate had other plans (one-shots, mini0series, guest appearances, etc.) for those characters to capitalize on their popularity. Since all of these things are plotted out up to year or so before the comic street dates, Misty and Tilda may be available now, but possibly weren't available when this new Simone title was pitched and greenlit.

Anyway, Simone is a writer, and writers usually have new ideas for characters all the time that they want to explore. And new characters don't have any pre-existing baggage from previous poor writing to retcon around.

Edit: From a purely pragmatic perspective, if any of Simone's brand new characters are later turned into a TV show, movie, or video game characters, she (and the artist) will likely be the key financial beneficiaries from Marvel residuals.

For instance, while Kelly Sue DeConnick is largely responsible for Captain Marvel's current popularity that paved the way for the upcoming movie, I don't think DeConnick will get the lion's share of the residuals, which will instead go mostly/entirely to CM's/Danvers' original creators and writers. (I'd be very happy to be wrong though.)

The big two have very real issues with people who work for them introducing new characters. Lots of issues with respect to who owns what, and a lot of time in court.

Really?? I hear it all the time. Every time a new character is introduced.. anywhere... of any gender... People come out of the woodwork about how they'd rather see their favorite character come off the bench than have some NEW character take their place.

Usually, because whatever niche this new character fills... has already been filled by someone else. It's the GIJoe/Transformers issue. There are SOOOOO Many characters, that whatever you thought of new, already exists. You want to make a new Scuba/Ninja/communications/medic type character?? Well the Joes ALREADY have that specialist, why not use THEM!

Even if that's the case, it is possible to say, "I am tired of new characters and want to see more existing ones used" (which is a fair sentiment and often one I agree with), without making tonally-off comments and bad-faith assumptions about tokenism.

In other news, I am really excited about Hotshots. I think it's going to be really good. Those who wish to piss on my parade can stand aside.

I think tokenism is a real thing in comics, and I am not sure where to come down on that in particular issue as a black comic book reader, as I would like to see more minority characters in general. But I just dont see Simone getting on board that particular train, or being okay with being told by tptb to do so- she would raise a quiet, professional stink, in all probability.

It may be a real thing, though certainly less so than in decades past when minority characters tended to be blatant stereotypes - often with "Black" in their names. Or female versions of male characters.

In modern times, while they're making more efforts to diversify (and balance out the historical load of mostly white, male characters), the characters themselves are less tokens and more just people. Certainly far less so than some of the vocal critics loudly proclaim.

Reminds me a little of what Claremont is supposed to have said when thinking of new characters for the X-Men: "Is there any reason this character can't be a woman?"

So...yeah Phil Coulson of Earth 616 just flat out murdered someone...

If that matters.

The optimist in me hopes that they use a good explanation for that. But the sceptic is thinking another bad clone or LMD.

Another thing is having a new team under goverment control and it being the Squadron Supreme. I think Hawkey said it best" five will get you ten that mindcontrol is involved" ^^

The only surprise will be who is behind this conspiracy. The most likley suspect is still dead for the moment^^

But that seems to be the week of the return on the dark side.

low,

not sure about good explanation so much as it seems that Phil is pissed at the Marvel Heroes for getting him killed (and Lola) and thinks they should pay.

As for the Squad, no idea but it might be that...

Also yes, I'm not happy about a certain Avengers Academy student working for AIM now.

doesn't sunspot own aim now?

I really liked that aspect of USAvengers.

Freehold,

He used to. But he gave it up when there was a revolt and Secret Empire happened. Plus the US Government got involved. As it stands now, AIM is uniquely it's own thing. And with no SHIELD, pretty much doing it's own thing.

Just read Extermination 5 and compared to most of the back to status quo stuff it is not so bad.

But

:
Rachel now mindcontrolled on Ahabs side? What the ....?

Is changing side month? First Finesse phil and now this.

I just hope that ends fast and they put her back in a team with a writer who gets her. And get past the being a hound and mindcontrolled stick.
That got old during the 80s.
I hoped the same before Gold started and look how that turned out.
But i could write that about a lot of characters :(

Me too, coming back and changing sides from good to bad got old superfast. And that would even be with a good explanation.

Low,

If you recall, Ahab had two new Hounds that could create MORE hounds. That's kind of how we got Honey Badger and the rest going Hound.

If that's any comfort, I dunno.

I know, but that Rachel can not be saved and is back to being a hound is just bad. And i do not think that it will get better for the forseeable future.

Perhaps it is just the first step of killing her off in the "final" fight with Ahab.
Maybe even with her taking him with her to go full cliche

I know, but that it is just Rachel that can not be saved looks not good. Being a hound just means even if she comes back, we will get the usual "hunted mutants" mantra that she was too often reduced to.

Could even be that this is the first step in killing her off.

"Final fight" with Ahab and they use the cliche of taking him with her after getting freed of his influence.

Low,

I just read Extinction. That was a pretty CRAPPY move. But honestly it wasn't the worst Marvel Comic of the week. That distinction clearly went to Infinity Wars since it wasn't even that good...

On the other side, at least Thor was decent.

Good thing I do not read Infinity Wars
One bad comic avoided^^

And yes Thor was quite good. But anytime Jane shows up I think " how many issues till she gets her power back?"^^

But the dwarf should get into a union, making hammers nonstop can not be good for his health^^

Gosh, I hope not, and yet, since the days of Excalibur, nobody has seemed to know what to do with her. (I complained loudly in the day that she, in place of useless new tool Quentin, would have been amazing as the instigator / ringleader of the Riot at Xaviers...)

Lot of older C and D-list heroic characters showing up as villains this past few months. Finesse, Rachel, Madrox. Tis the season, apparently. :)

Heh. I never liked Phil Coulson in the MCU, so the decision to port him over to 616 did not laser-target the demographic of me. And now he's getting Gyrich'd *and* associated with a Squadron Supreme team? Ouch. Even I don't dislike the guy *that* much!

Even in Excalibur, I'd say, as much as I liked that series.

No one's ever known what to do with Rachel. She's never had a coherent backstory or even really characterization. Even the takes I liked conflicted with others.

I liked it when she had the Phoenix Force. If only because then it kept the Fiery Death bird off the table...kind of.

And yeah, Set I feel you on poor Coulson.

As for the dwarf, low, I figure he's got the stamina to not worry about forging so much. As for Jane, I don't think she'll be the one to get the power so much as help Thor Odinson become more worthy and/or get Mjolnir back in fighting shape.

Writing out the Phoenix Force and leaving Rachel with just a part of its power was a good idea. The trouble started with bringing it back and making it evil and or crazy. Ignoring that Rachel had it without much problems for a long time did certainly not help^^

Regarding Jane I think she will get part of her power back at least. And if only for the reason that her series sold well and Marvel might want to make money using her again^^

Well, probably not by name, but I can pretty much promise we'll see Jane with powers again at some point. She was popular enough. She'll be back.

Someday.

I strongly doubt Aaron has any plans for that though.

I doubt it as well. I mean Aaron doing it. Some other writer? Sure.

Regardless War of the Realms should be interesting since it might mean a) we'll get Mjolnir back and b) Thor being worthy to use it again.

Thomas Seitz wrote:

No, we already have a Thunderstrike again as his Son used the name for some time now. Not that two using the same name has not happened before^^

I am certain that Jane will get powered up again and with a new series or getting a big role in a team book, with all this hints we got in Thor and the one-shot. War of the Realms would be perfect for that.

And yes Thor getting Mjölnir back during War of the realms is even more certain.

I don't expect to see Jane powered up again soon. Not sure what hints we've gotten.

I do expect Aaron's arc to end with Thor getting Mjölnir back, but then I expected him to get it back when Jane lost it, so what do I know.

thejeff,

Yeah I thought that too, him getting back...but I guess they needed a way to depower her WITHOUT her not being unworthy.

low,

I remain skeptical...but after the crap I read for Infinity War.... I'm at least certain War of the Realms won't suck as badly.

thejeff ,

the oneshot with Thors grandchildren visiting her had a few for example.

Thomas Seitz,

From what I heard being better than Infinity War is not really a praise or difficult to be. Sounds like AvX is better than that^^

Low,

Yeah well, at least AvX's antagonists made sense. Even if it was kind of hero versus hero. Along with the giant fiery death/life bird.

So honestly this week's offerings weren't as terrible as I'd thought...though I've said, Infinity War finale is just so...stupid!

Plus side was X-men Dissembled just up the power level by a factor of twenty now that Legion is being controlled by X-man. Now THERE'S a phrase I didn't think I'd say back in the 90s...

What's REALLY weird is how Miles MIGHT be doing a One More Day thing thanks to Mephisto. Yes. That guy. Geez.

Immortal Hulk's body horror has kind of shifted to more existential horror as we get to see Marvels Qlippoths up close. I also think Thaumiel might be some of nascent consciousness of Banner's that got stuck in Hell. But we'll see. Honestly STILL the best Hulk run since Greg Pak and/or Peter David.

Marvel Knights pulls a neat twist but not sure if I'm ready to believe that all four were involved in this inversion thing. Hulk? Sure. But Daredevil, Frank Castle and Electra? Not so much.

Speaking of Daredevil, it looks like Matt might be retiring. I think...

Runaways is very much a mixed bag...but I keep waiting for them to fix Victor's problems so he can go back to be on an Avengers side roster.

Shatterstar's solo has been bloody but fun. I especially loved the ending.

That's pretty much it for this week. Next week's Avengers new support team gets fleshed out more AND we see how that might impact a certain romantic interest via Thor.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So the Avengers newest support staff is kind of neat. Not quite "Home security while living inside a Celestial" but neither is it "Secret Avengers" where they go on mission that the face Avengers cannot. More like a mix of the two. It's very interesting and I look forward to seeing more of them. Also nice to see a nod towards War of the Realms.

SPEAKING of War of the Realms, the latest of issue of Thor showcase Rosalind Solomon's new life as an Agent of Wakanda. It's pretty neat and also kind of sad because she's now the ex...and Thor and Jen Walters are kind of dating...so there's that. Also apparently Cul, the Serpent is doing spy recon on the elves...but I still wonder why he's not gone full God of Fear on them. I mean he was an entire Cross over, once!

Man without Fear continues with Matt saying he's quitting...and some people wondering if that truck did brain damage. I wonder it...but then again he does have trouble walking right now...

Highlight for me was Cull Obsidian or Black Dwarf in the comics poetry commentary, especially as it related to Vogons. That was awesome. :)

Captain Marvel starts her new series with a fight against one of the more type cast villains of the FF. That and seeing her dealing with the repercussions of that mini-series is kind of...neat. We'll see how this volume goes.

Another Spider man comic, (though not with Miles), this time at a kind of street level meeting the mundane. It's not...outstanding but it is nice to see besides doing Peter Parker - The Spectacular Spider-Man and Amazing Spider-man. So we'll see how it goes.

Speaking of Miles Morales! His new series doesn't give us much but working with the Rhino AND fighting Tombstone does give it a kind of post Champions feel.

Spider-Gwen kind of wraps up Spiderverse with the funerals for some, while also kind of showcasing Gwen being the only one to cross universes...but unclear if they couldn't do that anyway with A Reed Richards...So...eh.

Finally rounding out the spider set, Venom shows us how the Symbiote alerts Eddie that Carnage is back. Not sure how I feel about these one shots...but we'll see if/when Eddie can get Venom back on his feet and being less...doggish? I guess.

On the mutant side, Domino finishes her solo run before doing her team thing. Honestly I like her team. I mean her, Diamondback and Outlaw are kind of like a more laid back X-force without the need to kill everyone. So yeah. I can't wait to see her and Atlas bear do more.

Iceman also finishes his run...but unlike Domino, I can honestly say a solo book the second time around...didn't do Bobby Drake any favors. Other than the team up with Spidey and Firestar, there wasn't much about this series I was interested in.

Uncanny X-men continues with X-man fighting everyone with his new suit/upgrade inside Legion. It's not much of a fight but it is...decent? I was kind of miffed though he turned Storm against them. But eh. At least the end page was a nice splash with all the other X-men.

X-23 continues with the new X-Assassin that apparently answers the question: Could you make a Wolverine/Deathlok hybrid and what would it look like? So far it seems kind of yes and only if you use a female. So we'll see how it goes.

Not every one of them was a favorite, but it was very cool to see such obscure and abandoned characters like Gorilla Man and American Eagle get remembered.

Snatching up Roz Solomon before she fell into the memory hole (as people in her niche, like Jimmy Woo or Derek Khanata, are wont to do) was also a cool idea. Grabbing someone from the mutant side of things (Broo) was also neat, as the sub-franchises sometimes feel a little too separated. I was thinking throughout the issue that the only main 'side' that didn't seem to be much represented was someone from the Marvel Knights / Supernatural side of things, and then the last page reveal addressed that. :)

(Although I'd still like to see someone like Sebastian Druid or Daimon Hellstrom on the Agents of Wakanda. Particularly Daimon, since he's got more 'doesn't play with others' drama potential, and seeing him butt heads with T'Challa, who seems unlikely to put up with it for long, would be amusing, in a 'Batman-punches-Guy' sort of way.)

Set,

I think they might get someone of that Supernatural set that isn't quite involved in stuff. I mean honestly I think they could still pick up Doctor Voodoo, but I'm guessing with Avengers: No Road Home, that will be addressed too. But mostly yeah having Broo there as Tech support is nice. But we'll see.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Love the support staff so far and hope to see more of them. Perhaps a mini or even an ongoing?^^

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yeah honestly one of the more interesting aspects of Aaron's run has been how he worked out what the Avengers need in light of all the crap that went down between Civil War II and Secret Empire.

So while some might gripe about the lack of horror in this issue; For me Immortal Hulk truly keeps us going/expanding the genre of what it is to be a Marvel Comic. Really, REALLY, REALLY loving Al Ewing's work on this; The coloration is also good.

Avengers side story was great, if only because, as Greylurker, observed, Iron Fist went Dwayne the Rock Johnson all over Mephisto. Who I also think might be the next big bad the Avengers face towards the end.

I'm combining these reviews because both Crypt of Shadows and War is Hell are one shots/one note things. They aren't necessarily BAD one ones (though the second story in War is Hell is better in my book); Mostly I read them and was like "Okay so that happened." Nothing that affect any heroes, villains or even in world continuity. Just...things.

Guardians though is REALLY shaping up well with the return of the Black Order, Hela AND of course the new line up. (Fist pump for Bill joining)

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man is still pretty light on the whole deep dive into Spider-man...but at least it's fun. So yeah. Oh and Johnny Storm makes a great little cameo.

Daredevil's next part of the mini-series shows us the two sided coin of Fisk and Daredevil. Not the best read...but a really nice take, especially after Season 3 of Daredevil on Netflix.

Shuri continues to struggle to find her voice...but I think the footing is getting there as she finds herself without the guidance of the spirits of her ancestors empowering her as much. Still think she might be making a mistake not fully embracing Black Panther-hood...but at least she's set on her path.

Superior Spider-man...not quite the seminal run as it predecessor, but at the same time you see Doc Oct continue to try to find his path while at the same time being himself. So there's that.

Uncanny Annual gives us more insight into both the events that led up to Extermination and that huge reveal from issue 5. So while I'm not 100% convinced they've redeemed Cyclops (or for that matter that Young Cable is that much of an improvement over older Cable), they at least managed to give plausible reasons and though processes towards Cyclops and the events that lead to X-men Disassembled.

I'm just happy that they got cyclopse to realise he had been acting more like the guys he used to fight and that he was wrong (Also thought the set up of having the guy he had saved in the past helping save him and in tears thanking him for what he had done was a nice touch.)
