A PC rolled a nifty nat 20, with the goal to reverse grapple a tentacle.
Now for 2 different situations i'd like to know if it works.
1) Black tentacles spell?
2) The body of the monster to which the tentacles are attached, is beyond the PC's sight and reach, can it still reverse grapple?
1) What would be the point? As in what does your player hope to gain from it?
2)It's probably not so difficult to hold onto something that's holding onto you, but again, what's the point?
To both #1 and #2:
I don't know why he'd want to grapple it, other than maybe making it look cool? He's not aware of whether this is a creature or spell.
I mean, i've not before seen someone aiming to grapple black tentacles, so i'm unsure of whether there is any use in being able to.
Black Tentacles break the normal rules of grapple. Controlling the grapple doesn't actually do anything, you can't move, damage, or reposition, or anything else the spell and the spell can still damage you.
#2 is different because this would either be a special case in which the tentacles are considered creatures and habe their own special rules, or the creature itself is or of reach and cannot bbw attacked or grappled at all except at range
If it is cool and it has no effect, there's never a reason to not let them do it.
