Order of the cockatrice cavalier

Can this work as a PFS member considering their code/edict?

For now I am leaving aside that they might have questionable effectiveness given lack of good perception or knowledge skills to supplement any combat ability and social skills

I more cannot see how one could work as a member of the society when their code is to be selfish and self serving. Equal share of the loot is done for you, no way of getting more

I'd like to play one mainly for the level 2 ability which I love and fits a concept I want to play

But I might have to save this for non society play ...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

You can certainly play such a character, but you must have the character realize that the success of the party is an extension of their own success. Making them cooperative is not optional, but their self-centeredness and desire for glory can certainly be played up comically for the enjoyment of the whole table. If you don't think you can play it in a way that is entertaining for those around you, then it is best to pick something else.

You want the glory, you hype up your contributions and downplay the parties, Maybe trying placing dibs on the most of the stuff to use/hold onto during the adventure, you tell the venture captain at the end that you should get a little extra for your work, maybe have something like profession get extra from the Venture captions or perform get extra from the Venture captains. Sure mechanically you're not getting extra, but you're trying to, and that's the important bit.

I was thinking of utilising the perform skill you gain

And to Mimo: the intention was always for it to be comedic . A gilderoy Lockhart , captain flasheart inspired character

Bluff all the way (original concept was about convincing people he is a paladin - that part might go)

Idea would be daring champion as the mount is a hinderance (especially in the society from what I can tell). There don't seem to be many other options for replacing the mount sadly

Order of the pike is a pretty good one for replacing the mount, makes your weapon choices limited, but you get weapon training and personal bonuses for charging.

The Exchange 5/5

Heck, just play down a lot.
you get out of tier gold - which would be MORE than everyone else at the table.

Be sure to play it up (in fun - drop the subject if it is bothering the other players) - each encounter the other players get XX.XX gp and you get MORE PAY! LOL!

After all - you deserve it right? Clearly, you're better than the rest of them anyway... and the Powers That Be know this, so they pay you more.

when you are 3rd level, be sure to play low Tier in 1-5 scenarios. When you are 5th, do the same in Tier 3-7. When 7th, play 5-9s, when 9th play in Tier 7-11. And ALWAYS play down, always play with PCs of lower level than you are. In the long run this will mean you are have a little less gold than average - but then you'll face easier (for you anyway) challenges...

Just a note: I believe he means the Disciple of the Pike archetype from Monster Hunter's Handbook. A rather neat archetype that I've been looking into making a character for myself. I love spears and polearms.

Yes, that is correct, my mistake on the name.

There's also a related order called the Order of the Hero that is made for the archetype, allowing your full Cavalier level to bonus to knowledge checks about monsters (and even untrained!)

I think this is pretty good advice regardless which type of character you'd play. If you are creating a jerk, of any stripe, or a character who's incalcitrance makes them a jerk, then you are better off considering how this will affect the other players' enjoyment at the table instead of being incalcitrant yourself on playing said character.

The plan was always for humorous slant on it

I just wanted to make sure a character wouldn't be penalized for not fully playing up the selfish part of his code (specifically because I wouldn't want to annoy people with that part)

Second Seekers (Roheas) 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 ***** Regional Venture-Coordinator, Appalachia

My favorite PFS character is an Order of the Cockatrice Cavalier - Originally it was to do a sort of self centered glory hogging gladiator sort of thing but it evolved to be a more deadly serious "I am the only one who can do this and you may as well not try" attitude toward other martials."

Cooperative, but on his own terms.

Scarab Sages

I have an Order of the Cockatrice Samurai. I play up the Glory-hound aspect of it (hopefully comically), claiming to be the best swordsman, claiming opponents died out of fear of my great tales (instead of my allies swords and spells, which I congratulate out of character), Challenging the most intimidating looking opponent, and so on. I even bought the Herald Vanity to make sure everyone knows who I am, possibly in a Pro-Wrestling announcer voice.

Still cooperates and shares the wealth, just always gets an equal share of anything.
