Can a mechanic use his exocortex combat tracking to have his full BaB on gunnery checks, or would you need to max piloting to get "full Bab"?

core rule book 322:

Quote:
Class features and items affect crew actions only if specifically noted in the class feature or item

So no.

Basically any time you want to know if X interacts with starship rules the answer is no unless you find something in the rules that specifically says yes. thats my take away at least.

Of course, it's a weird party where the mechanic would be a gunner instead of an engineer.

Silver Crusade

As long as you keep your ranks in Pilot maxed, it works out the same anyway.

Maybe you've got an exocortex mechanic who is used to an augmented reality world view which is almost the same as living in a starship gunnery module letting them easily adapt to the role whereas the drone mechinic is less of a software interaction type of character and more of "you can bypass the hyperdrive shut off with three space bobby pins and a stick of veskium gum." which makes them a better fit down with Jordy in engineering.

Which would still be a weird party. Weird isn't bad, but the mechanic receives a scaling bonus to engineering checks, and has a primary attribute that matches the skill. The best engineer in a group that contains a mechanic is almost certainly going to be the mechanic. Meanwhile any character with a high dex and either high BAB or ranks in pilot can make a good gunner. Being a good gunner is pretty basic.

I mean, you can come up with backstory for why your character doesn't do what their class normally does, but that's not really "normal". For instance, I could make a Solarian that only does sniping, but that's hardly normal, and doesn't use the class's bonuses to best effect.
