Can you get Weapon Focus with Spells / Rays?

Rules Questions

Title.

I'd lean no. Rays is for sure a no, since rays don't have special rules in Starfinder.

You can get it for rays (but not for other spells), according to a source that is official as it gets:

Choose one type of weapon. You can also choose unarmed strike or grapple (or ray, if you are a spellcaster) as your weapon for the purposes of this feat.

Prerequisites: Proficiency with selected weapon, base attack bonus +1.

Benefit: You gain a +1 bonus on all attack rolls you make using the selected weapon.

Special: You can gain this feat multiple times. Its effects do not stack. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of weapon.

No leaning about it.

It might help to look at the Starfinder feat and not the Pathfinder feat.

I have to force myself to double check the forum I'm in now every time I go to answer a rules question...

I could have sworn it said Pathfinder rules questions when I posted . . . .

Seems pretty dumb go not allow it on rays honestly.

Starfinder has no such section that specifically calls out what a "Ray" is in the spells section like Pathfinder did. Several spells use the word "ray" but they all then specific that you target EAC.

So without a specific rules element known as "rays," it's tough to then use that concept in conjunction with other rules.

I'd say no. In the weapons section Weapon Types there is a specific list. The list includes:

"Weapon types include basic melee, advanced melee, small arms, longarms, heavy weapons, sniper weapons, grenades, and special weapons."
