Under the drone skill unit description it states that you can choose a skill from a given list and that this skill is treated as a class skill for your drone and that the drone can use this skill while not under your direct control (i.e. it can use this skill without an action being required by you, although your drone must still be within range of your custom rig if not under your direct control and you must be able to issue commands to it.)

A couple of the roles for starship combat call for the use of skills for which drones can become proficiency, namely engineering for the engineer role and computers for the science officer role.

Drones can get a mod that gives them manipulator arms which allows them to perform "most functions that your arms can perform."

So, can a drone that has taken a relevant skill (engineer or computers) that has manipulator arms perform a role in addition to the mechanic PC during starship combat?

There's nothing in the starship chapter either way, so it'll be up to the GM. I for one will allow it.

The drone is a class feature.

I think it should be allowed, but by a strict reading of the rules it would not.

That particular line in the rulebook is causing me a lot of questions.

That line gives me pause too, "Class features and items affect crew actions only if specifically noted in the class feature or item."

I don't really think this was written with an eye to drones, and it doesn't say class features...can't take crew actions, only that they can't affect crew actions(as in given bonuses to) but I'm less confident that they can before reading this.

But now I have so many additional questions, engineering role is engineering checks, one of the class features of mechanic gives a bonus to engineering checks, this class feature doesn't specify that it works in spaceship combat does that mean I don't get my +1 engineering bonus to those checks, RAW seems to say that I don't.

I think you are overthinking this if you are questioning whether a skill bonus from your class applies to your ability to Engineer a ship. It does. I think what isn't included is an Envoy's Get Em and spells like True Strike (if it still exists) and the like.

I read through the whole section again to try to give my brain a good frame of reference...and it really didn't get a whole lot clearer.

But I do think this is on the right track for RAI. I don't think the game wants you trying to apply normal attack or damage bonuses to gunnery checks, for example. Or speed enhancement bonuses to your ship speed.

Even if your DM doesn't allow your Drone to fulfill a role, it can still use its skills for Aid Another actions, I would imagine. Won't work with gunnery and such, but helping out other skills for use of the Sensors, piloting, engineering tasks, etc. May not be much, but it's not detracting from your own actions.

Irritating. I rather like the idea of being able to use Weapon Focus on Starship Weapons, or allowing your insight or divine attack bonuses to help with your gunnery as well.
