The Pathfinder Rules Questions subforum serves to connect GMs and players alike who have questions about game mechanics. Each participant in this subforum will have varying levels of experience with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, and what may seem like an obvious question may be coming from someone who isn't as familiar with more nuanced aspects of the game.

This goal of this subforum is to be a helpful resource to support the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. To assist our teams in achieving that, we ask that:

  • Posters read through the Community Guidelines and understand them before engaging.
  • Each new thread be focused on a specific rules question.

What this subforum is NOT for:

  • Lengthy rants about the way the rules have been written.
  • Feedback on the FAQ system, or a recent FAQ answer. (You can provide any feedback you have about the FAQ system itself in Website Feedback.)
  • Explicit demands or petitions for rules changes.
  • Personal criticisms of any member of Paizo staff or any of Paizo's freelancers.

Posts may be removed, threads locked, or suspensions issued depending on the severity of any of the above.

How the FAQ System Works

Aspects of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game may be confusing or unclear, and the FAQ system provides GMs/players with official answers from our designers. However, it is not intended to provide answers to niche, situational questions that are uncommonly found at the gaming table. Paizo firmly believes that it is the role of GMs to issue rulings in respect to unusual characters or encounters.

As indicated above, if you believe a question should be a candidate to be answered in the FAQ, it is best formatted as an actual question, in as clearly a format as you can manage (without links to past discussions or extraneous situational detail). As community members respond to the question, they may mark it as an FAQ candidate for our team to review. The FAQ system is based on individual posts, not by each thread—spamming a thread with FAQ clicks will not generally result in a faster answer. For insight into how FAQ and Errata is processed by our teams, refer to this blog post by Director of Game Design, Jason Bulmahn.

New answers are provided on a weekly basis on Tuesday. You can keep up to date on what's been answered in the FAQ Updates Sticky Thread. If a question has been and is marked with "answered in errata," you may find PDFs of errata documents on the Free Downloads page.

The FAQ System & Organized Play

The Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild utilizes Pathfinder Roleplaying Game FAQ in the campaign. Additionally, the Organized Play team addresses campaign-specific issues in their own FAQ system or the online Campaign Clarifications document. For questions specifically geared towards Organized Play, please post them in the Roleplaying Guild General Discussion subform.
