Starting equipment for a fresh character

Pathfinder Society

I am putting together my first character (aerokineticist) and have reached the point of figuring out what equipment to spend that starting gold on. I am a little confused by a few things from the Roleplaying Guild Guide however.

I know there is a list of always available items from the core rule-book, and I understand using prestige to purchase items. The part that is throwing me for a loop is the fame requirement for purchasing items up to certain costs. Am I reading this correctly that I have to get 5 fame (complete at least 3 adventures) before my character is allowed to purchase mundane items from any source other then the core rule-book (or chronicle sheets)?

There are many non magical items that I would consider for a starting character, but, to keep the question simple, could I buy a Pathfinder's Kit to have in my character's very first adventure or would he have to earn 5 fame before he could even buy that with gold?

I would think that as completely mundane equipment and especially as a basic starting set of gear, it would be completely reasonable to have available (especially being in both the Society Primer and Field Guide), but, as far as I can tell, the rules would require me to buy it with PP or wait until I have 5 fame.

The Exchange 1/5

Mundane equipment is fine to purchase as long as it is on the additional resources page. You are limited to the always available list on magic items until you hit 5 fame.

That is great to hear and feels completely sensible to me, but, just to be that guy, is that explicitly spelled out somewhere that I could point to if asked by a GM just how I expect my character to buy items that are not expressly in the always available list as written in the Roleplaying Guild Guide.

Guide page 19:

Always Available Items
You may always purchase the following items or
equipment as long as you’re in an appropriately sized
settlement (see above).
• All basic armor, gear, items, and weapons from
Chapter 6 of the Pathfnder RPG Core Rulebook,
including items for Small and Large characters. This
does not include equipment made from dragonhide,
but it does include equipment made from the other
special materials, such as alchemical silver and cold
iron (see the Special Materials section on page 154
of the Core Rulebook). All mundane weapons, armor,
equipment, and alchemical gear found in any other
source that is legal for play are considered always
available, including masterwork quality versions
where a cost is defned.
• +1 weapons (2,000 gp + 300 gp for the masterwork
weapon cost + item cost)
• +1 armor (1,000 gp + 150 gp for the masterwork armor
cost + item cost)
• +1 shields (1,000 gp + 150 gp for the masterwork armor
cost + item cost)
• Potions and oils of 0- or 1st-level spells at caster level
1st (50 gp or less)
• Scrolls of 0- or 1st-level spells at caster level 1st (50 gp
or less)
• Wayfnder (at a 50% discount for 250 gp; see page 299 of
Pathfnder Campaign Setting: The Inner Sea World Guide)
• All items purchased with Prestige Points.
Beyond the gear noted above, your character is
restricted to purchasing additional items either from his
accumulated Chronicle sheets or by capitalizing on his
Fame (see page 21). Weapons, armor, equipment, magic
items and so on that are outside of these lists are not
available for purchase at any time

• All basic armor, gear, items, and weapons from
Chapter 6 of the Pathfnder RPG Core Rulebook,

took me a few reads but there it is.

I don't know how I missed that statement when I was specifically looking for something like that in the same document. That clears up everything, thanks.

The guide is a lot of dense information, and a lot to sort through. Stuff gets missed.

The exception, of course, is the very next sentence:

So if it's campaign legal, non-magical, and isn't dragonhide, then it's Always Available.

Just for those who drop in on the thread later; the OP has clearly just read the Guide. :P
