A little help please, new potential SF "Society" GM and player

Starfinder Society

OK Iv'e read what I can about running/playing a Starfinder Society game and with nothing to go to "register" for this specifically?? I take it I sign up to the regular PFS to get a number to get events up and later to report on them I think?

Or is there an actual "Starfinder way" to do this, or is it not out yet??

Next I will be running (mostly) and playing (a few) on the net in Roll20 so is there something extra I have to do to get events up and report on them after they are complete.

I plan to mostly GM these but want to also run through a few beforehand credit or no credit so I get more of the feel of the system and all that goes with it before going for it as a GM.

Thanks and sorry if this was a stupid question, I'm a vet at Pathfinder GM and player, but Society games not so much as you can see.......

Hey Tom, Welcome to Organized Play! We're happy to have you join us! There are no stupid questions.

Yes, you can register your game as a regular event number since many Organized Play events after August 17th will include a mixture of both PFS and SFS adventures. No one can register a Starfinder character yet... I am hoping that they will open that option up in the week before Starfinder launches to take some pressure off of launch day -- August 17th.

If you are running on Roll20, would you like to join the official Starfinder Discord Channel? There are a lot of organized play GMs and Venture Officers on that channel who would love to help you with any questions you might have!

SFSchat.com

There will likely be Starfinder games launching on SFSchat right from the get go, so you should be able to get into a game shortly after launch (especially if you tell people that you are new and plan to GM!)

We'd be happy to walk you through the process of writing up chronicles and reporting scenarios, but that may be easier to understand once you've played a few games. Would you be open to trying a PFS game to see how the overall process works for Organized play?

We also welcome questions here on the official forums too of course! As a matter of fact... If you ask a question on here, likely ten people will come to answer it. We're a chatty and helpful bunch overall.

Glad you can join us,

Keep an eye out on the blogs.
It seems that Thurston is going to be posting stuff for Starfinder Society every wednesday until GenCon.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of those would be the announcement that we can register our starfinder characters and stuff.

I have just registered to Discord and the Channel.

If you can, downloading the app is recommended. Especially for voice it is (or, at least, was) significantly better.

And lots of discord games use discord voice

I am a PFS Venture Agent who will not be going to Gen Con. So, I would like to know how I can schedule anything for August 19th at my local shop. (Games Inn, Hobart, Indiana near Chicago.) Any suggestions?

It depends on how fast a study you are. Starfinder's CRB will come out August 17th. The SFS adventures will likely be dropping to our accounts before Starfinder actually comes out, so you may be in the weird position of being able to read the adventures before you read the rules to run them.

You might be able to do this if you've been reading all the preview blogs that have come out, and read some of the interviews. They've leaked a lot of information about how Starfinder will work.

If you still want to try this, I'd schedule the quest series, Into the Unknown. They're going to be used at GenCon as an introduction to the Starfinder system, so they should be a good bet for you. Plus, they use pregens, so you don't have to worry about a ton of different character builds right out of the gate.

However... If I were you I'd schedule something PFS for the week of the 19th, and talk up Starfinder like crazy to debut the week after. Give yourself a week to study!

Another player is likely to be our primary Starfinder GM. However, I may have to figure out how quick a turnaround I can do. (I have a lot of plates spinning right now.)

Have to echo this suggestion. Give yourself time to digest what Starfinder is. Maybe have a couple hours for your players to create characters, or review the pregens then the following week dive into SFS.

The differences between Pathfinder and Starfinder but not HUGE, but they require a some time for both players and GMs to get familiar with.

Agreed, all of us in the OP's Roll20 group are planning to start long games like the AP in early September. There's also talk of running the evergreen SFS scenario the last week of August for the GMs as mind-meld rules smoothing test run.

Interested in join in that group. Any Room? How do I go about doing that?

If there's no room in the OP's group, check out the SFS Discord Channel to get together with other interested online players and GMs.

Also... If you are interested in doing Play-by-Post, there's also Castamir's Flaxseed Station!

Hi, in addition to the Discord Channel (which I highly recommend) I would like to direct any and all of you on Reddit to The Starfinder Society Subreddit

It's new, but its available for people to use to talk about the society game, look for players online and IRL, and to post links regarding Society play.

Absolutely! More than enough room, the link is here. We have it setup for 50 players and are currently 27 strong.

What I've reviewed so far has shown me that the chassis is close to Pathfinder, but many of the tools and attachments are changed. I liken it to the difference between 3.5 and PF. You'll probably be tripping over the minor differences like what doesn't provoke AoOs any more and how you can use resolve.

I think the idea of waiting a week or more to read the CRB is a good idea...

However, I have scheduled to DM a game of SFS on the 18th (I play in Paris, France, so with the time difference, it would not be possible to do it on the 17th anyhow) and will, as Hilary Hmm said, run the SFS Quests.

Since I will probably not know much about the rules yet (have followed all that is out so far - blogs, podcasts etc. - and know some of the basic changes) my plan is to probably only run 2, maybe 3 of the quests, taking our time to do so, and to be upfront with the fact that there will be rules I do not yet know and such on my part

I am doing this because it will still be summer, where people have more time, and the game will just be out, so I want to start seeing if we can attract some new people to the PFS/SFS crowd in town.
