Rat on a Rat

Advice

So pretty soon I'm going to be playing a campaign where I want to play a ratfolk Ranger (starts at level one) and my gm allows Core and Advanced Players Guide only (I convinced him to let me play a ratfolk after showing him the stats: he's open to requests as long as they are reasonable) and, as most rangers do, will be getting an animal companion at fourth level.

I am going for archery and thought mounted archery looks good (especially as a small character) so originally was going to go for a cheetah as they are fast and medium once they get advanced. But the "dire rat" option was nagging me, it fits so well with a ratfolk. I considered going beastmaster and investing everything in the cheetah except for 1 level for a bird and 1 level for a dire rat to serve as scouts (I could scry through them with beastmaster) but didn't like that archetype much.

So I started looking for ways to get the dire rat to medium size so I can ride it. It isn't necessarily optimal, purely flavor. The best I could find is animal growth and begging my gm to let permanency work with that spell (why doesn't it? It works for enlarge person and this is pretty much enlarge person for animals) but that is still somewhat expensive. So I come asking, is there a Core Rulebook/Advanced Players Guide way to get a giant rat mount for my ratfolk ranger that doesn't involve begging my gm to take all of my gold on an endeavor that probably isn't worth it anyway?

There are Riding Rats in the Monster Codex. They are actually in the section on Ratfolk. It's far from optimal, as it stays Medium, but it is exactly what you're looking for as its basically just a Medium sized Dire rat.

I was going to mention the Riding Rat from the Monster Codex, but then I saw the sources you have access to...

If Animal Growth won't work, what about Reduce Person on yourself?

EDIT: Ninja'd!

Thanks for the advice. When I saw the reduce person thing, my first thought was "but i want to do, you know, ANY damage" then I thought "as an archer I'd be doing 1d4+str mod with a tiny composite longbow, but with the +4 to hit from being small and a HUGE dex mod I'll always do that 1d4+ (presumably) 1, and a couple times a round so I'll be doing some, and favored enemy, and at that point I'll have a magic longbow meaning decent damage but I love the idea of being tiny riding a dire rat everywhere (and they have a climb and swim speed: this is turning out quite nicely). Thanks for the suggestion, I might end up doing that!

I was thinking about Riding Rat as well, but I thought OP wanted to choose it as their Animal Companion. And the Ranger's choice of Animal Companions is extremely limited. It includes Dire Rat, but does not include Riding Rat which would be slightly stronger.
A Reduced Ratfolk riding a normal-sized Dire Rat is pretty funny, though, and would work just fine with the rules. Reduce Person is also just a +2 to AC and ranged attack and a +1 to Reflex saves, so it's pretty strong.

There is a feat in the advanced class guide, undersized mount, that would let you ride a dire rat at encumbrance.

Get muleback chords on the rat to remove encumbrance.

Deadly aim, Point Blank Shot (sometimes), magic enhancements, you'll find ways to damage as a tiny little rat rider. I love the idea.

If you took a level dip into a familiar-having class, you could have a rat riding your rat-riding rat. It would be a matryoshka doll of rodential awesome!

Riding Rats are listed that any Ratfolk in a class with a Companion or Mount (or similar class feature) can select a Riding Rat. My PFS Gunslinger/Cavalier has a Riding Rat.

I was already considering of taking some levels of shadowdancer just because I love that class, so what if I become a ranger 16/wizard 1/shadowdancer 3 to have a rat riding a rat riding a rat and a shadow companion that groans anytime my ranger makes a rat pun? Like the rats are all comedic and the shadow is super serious? Oh and totally breaking action economy or something like that, who knows.

Talk about cheese!

I'll show myself out...

Been trying to figure out what they mean by "similar class feature" since I saw that. Clearly not eidolon or phantom, and presumably not familiar, so maybe some future CFE (class feature entity)?

K-kun, I'm curious what your build plan for this character is. How many levels of each? What feats at what levels? Stats? I've really been wanting to do this since I got my ratfolk boon, but haven't been able to put together a build I'm happy with.

Perhaps a Ratfolk Paladin with Divine Bond?

My character has only played part 1 of the Gallows of Madness so far, and is thus only level 2, though I still need to do the actual level up. I've already got a character with all four chronicles of that 3-parter, so my Ratfolk shall have to put in the effort for future levels.

Tiffany is/was a member of the Blackjacket mercenary league from Druma. He wields an Obsidian Battleaxe known as Aegil and his Blunderbuss is called Captain D. He shall ride into battle upon Argo the Riding Rat.

I'm looking at 3 or 5 levels of Gulch Gunner Gunslinger and 7 or 9 levels of Luring Cavalier.
Boon Companion will be a must, along with Point-Blank and Precise Shots. Currently he has Gunsmithing and Rapid Reload(Blunderbuss).
Thanks to a boon, he has 3 traits: Larger Than Life, Dangerously Curious, and Whistle Blower.
I traded out the Ratfolk Darkvision and Slow Speed for Low-Light Vision and 30ft Speed. I also swapped Swarming for Cheek Pouches (Best place to store Acid Flasks!).
I kept Rodent Empathy to boost checks with Argo.
Stats are 12/16/12/10/14/14
Tiff may not be much to look at right now since he's part way through leveling up to 2nd, but I see great things for this little guy!
