Thought I'd throw this question here rather than starting a new thread for it: does anyone know (or feel like hazarding a guess) about the special at PaizoCon? Will it be version B of Solstice Scar or a new special entirely? I'm trying to decide if I should sign up for Solstice Scar B at a local con, or wait until PaizoCon to play it there.

Thanks!

I'm currently working on the schedules for PaizoCon, Origins, and Gen Con. To aid your planning, we are not offering 8-99B at PaizoCon. We will be debuting 8-99C. So I suggest following HMM's advice and playing 8-99B at a local convention.

Remember, you can play it with the same character as 8-99A and receive credit for both!

I hear there will be some pretty great GMs.

I had been thinking about attending this year and just noticed that the registration site was up. It looks like all the hotel rooms are already sold out. Is that normal?

Have you spoken with the hotel? I think they may add rooms to the block as needed.

No, I just tried the online portal and saw that no rooms came up for any of the dates. Never having gone before, I wasn't sure if that was normal or not. I imagine since it's near the airport there must be tons of other hotels in the area, but do most people just stay on site?

The reason I was curious about whether it's an actual sellout is the hotel has the entire week and change blocked off from the 21st to the 31st and there's no rooms avaliable through the portal even for nights before the con begins. That seemed sorta strange....do people usually arrive 3 days before and leave 4 days after?

Paizo Employee Managing Developer

Some people extend their stay to see the sights in Seattle either before or after the show. It does seem odd that the entire hotel is sold out at this point. I suggest calling the hotel and talking to a human. I suspect something is weird with their site. Since tickets for PaizoCon just went on sale, I'm pretty sure that there are rooms available at the hotel.

Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

ALSO:

The room block for certain rooms is fluky, you have to kind of tweak it to the time of the convention and then try to call after (which reminds me tomorrow I have to call on mine...)

Paizo Employee Chief Operations Officer

I spoke with the hotel and the block should be good now. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Sovereign Court

before i reserve a room, anyone wanna go in halves with me. id prefer to save lil bit of money to buy stuff with.

There are a number of hotels nearby and people do stay at them. I vastly prefer to stay on site—there is a lot to be said for being able to run to your room when you want. These days I call and upgrade to a room in the tower. The trek to rooms in the wings can feel like you’re in another hotel.

As Adam said, some will be staying before or after to catch the sights. I think some have complained in the past that the block didn’t cover their whole stay in those cases, so they are probably trying to accommodate us by extending the duration of the Paizo block.

Now that I'm planning to play 8-99B locally, per Hmm's sage advice, and working on mustering a table to play with friends, I've another question: is there any benefit to playing A, B, etc. with the same character? I don't mean to be shopping for boons or anything, I'm just curious if it's the recommended approach or if it doesn't really matter.

Shadow Lodge

There is a minor benefit on the chronicle sheet.

Being pedantic -
PaizoCon is May 25-28 at the DoubleTree by Hilton near Seattle Airport.
=====
Last year was my first year and I walked about.

Expect cool to cold weather, and maybe rain. Jeans and black t-shirts seem to be the norm, and a jacket or sweater.

The DoubleTree is themed disney-esque rustic(think 1970). I stayed out on the lake which is as far from the convention as possible (lol). The first two near branches or the tower would be okay. The hotel is quite nice and the paizo price is good (probably less than the nearby others).
There is a shuttle to the airport which is essentially across the highway.
A miniFridge is $10/day and shows up in your hotel room, put that on your reservation request.
The Red Lion, Coast Gateway, LaQuinta, Hampton Inn, Radisson are good.
The Days Inn and Sea-Tac Crest Motor Inn are questionable. I'd check TripAdvisor first.

Costco is nearby (head up to 176 ST and head east) for shared ride as it's a very long walk.
7-11 south on 99.

Chain eateries within 1 block are; Denny's, Jack in the Box, Taco Bell, Subway.
Food (like any convention hotel) is expensive and not very appealing. They do have protein drinks and caffeinated waters.
=====
Tickets for PaizoCon and DoubleTree Hotel purchased... see yall there.

The L&I Hawaiian BBQ place across the street is also a good food choice. The best thing about the deli inside the hotel is 5 bucks for a bottomless coffee cup for the day, especially useful for those 8 am time slots. The best thing to eat in the deli is the pizza, if you don't mind paying $10 for a mini-pizza

The Crest Motor Inn has terribly uncomfortable beds, smells like smoke in the non-smoking rooms, and is dirty. However, they do have cheap parking (You'll save a couple of bucks a day and don't have to stay at the hotel to park there), so it may be useful for locals who want to save on the $8/day parking at the Doubletree.

I'm waiting to see when the ticket lottery starts with event signup. Last year the special was booked right away...

There's also the option to book with a friend - both accounts have to friend each other.

I always felt the decor had an Asian vibe.

I've stayed both in the tower and "out by the lake". The walk from the lake isn't bad, but I do like to walk. Instead of paying any upgrade fee for the tower (as I did last year), I'll just take whatever room I get regardless of location.

Azothath wrote:

The walk from baggage claim to the hotel is actually shorter than the shuttle ride. But, as I said, I like to walk.

Azothath wrote:

If I remember correctly, the hotel offers shuttles to Westfield Southcenter Mall. I might be misremembering that, as I've never used it, but I thought there was a sign about it near the concierge. The light rail station is within walking distance (though the old folks I walked there with last year may disagree; I've probably mentioned I like to walk) if you have time and want to head downtown for some sightseeing or beter eating choices.

Azothath wrote:

Coffee and a breakfast sandwich at Jack in the Box before your first slot is quick and inexpensive. The Denny's scared me (went there for pie late one night; they have no pie). Subway appears to be packed between sessions; expect a wait. Taco Bell is cheap, fast and close... but it is Taco Bell.

Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

...and also the Taco Bell experience two years ago that swore me off Taco Bell.

They may have changed since then, but... *shudder*

Jack in the Box wasn't bad, but it was 'just fast food'.

Denny's was actually pretty decent -- except for all the drunk folks that came stumbling in the one evening (it was pretty late)

The diner was an enjoyable experience, though I do like eating at diners and understand what one should expect from one.

I'm getting in on Wednesday, definitely want to head outside of the immediate area to get something to eat/perhaps food shop because the local area selections are pricier and somewhat limited.

There is a safeway not too far from the hotel

My discount card might even *work* there, since they are part of our Greater Co-Prosperity Conglomerate... Bonus!

What is the schedule for the con itself? How early does it start on Friday and how late does it go on Monday? Flight times want to know...

As I recall around 7-8AM on Friday until maybe 3PM on Monday, officially. Some of us stay up way too late gaming on Monday night, and many of the Paizo peeps are hanging around at the bar until late.

Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

If your budget, work, and health can swing it, try to leave on Tuesday.

Monday is Memorial Day, and an expensive overbooked travel day

I was actually seeing slightly lower airfares were I to fly back on Monday.

It is known as the heaviest travel day. Good luck and godspeed Eazy-E. Cyzzane and I returned that day one time, and swore never again.

I saw lower fares, but had no intent to fly back that day (unless the savings had been substantial); I’ll be staying until late Tuesday afternoon.

First slot for games will be 8 a.m. Registration starts at 7, if I recall correctly.

Shadow Lodge

Thanks. All the local cons start later on Fridays, so I'm glad I asked and didn't try to get in Friday morning before the con.

Scarab Sages

This past year I flew in Thursday afternoon and got in a pre-con game/met new people. Definitely recommend it over Friday morning. I flew out Monday afternoon, and while I didn't experience any problems airport/flight wise I do wish I'd stayed till Tuesday(or at least later that night) as I left straight from my last table for the airport.

And now there are three of us coming!!!

So I'm curious about the special guests for the con. Is the list done or they still working on adding more?

We've got Taylor Fischer and the guys from the Glass Cannon Podcast coming as our Special Guests (link). PaizoCon also has many industry folks who attend either as fans, running events, or just interacting with the community.

Is there a group rate for the hotel? I emailed Paizo about it when I bought my tickets on Monday but haven't heard back--I'm just worried if I book a room not at the group rate I won't be able to get it.

Alright booked my flight! coming in Thursday afternoon.

What kind of interest would there be in a Seattle Downtown/Waterfront/Space Needle tour type thing on Thursday? Timitius used to do them, and I feel local enough now that I'd be willing to wrangle people around if there's interest. Very easy ride to downtown on the Link Light Rail (that's the very formal name for the single (currently) subway/elevated line that runs from just south of the airport up to the north side of Seattle). Could also be Tuesday, but one or the other, not both.

If interested, at least PM or email (see profile) and I'll keep you informed.

Just checked my flights. Fly in Thursday afternoon, fly out Tuesday morning. Otherwise I would have been interested.

Well, room is booked and tickets are bought.

As an aside, why is there no link to purchase tickets on the PaizoCon section of the site? I know there has been a lot of criticism of the new layout (I do not like it at all) but to leave off a link to buy tickets to the event on the event page seems... odd.

Web site layout gripes aside, I am really looking forward to the convention this year. I had to skip last year.

Soooooon

Liberty's Edge

Is there a forum area for people looking to split a room? $130+tax per night for a room that has 1 king or 2 queen beds is a bit much for just 1 person.
