I was wondering which school would be better as an opposition school: abjuration or conjuration. This is assuming one HAD to be an opposition school.

It really does depend. Conjuration is really popular for Summon Monster. If you want to use that frequently, then select abjuration and just bite the bullet for the occasional abjuration spell you want.

You just need to weigh the two. Conjuration is summoning, calling, teleportation, & creation. Abjuration has defenses, traps, negation, and banishment.

I would say the majority of the time you should choose abjuration as the opposition school, but it does depend on the build.

The Exchange

I like both schools. Abjuration can probably be replaced with wands and scrolls easier than conjuration. Conjuration school/subschool powers look better too. Just my quick instant opinion.


Conjuration is the best school of magic in the game. It has a huge number of highly versatile and powerful spells, and many of these spells (for example, Teleport) are difficult to replicate with other schools of magic. The only reason to ever oppose Conjuration is if you're intentionally weakening your character. Given these two choices, Abjuration should always be your opposition school choice.


Abjuration with Opposition research

Abjuration has many many great spells. They are however replaceable with illusion spells or a cleric.

Meanwhile conjuration has a many great spells that are difficult or impossible to duplicate otherwise. Even as an illusionist shadow conjuration spells don't completely fill in for conjuration spells of particular levels.

This is with or without cheese allowed as both have some really dumb combos


Rule #1: Do not make conjuration an opposition school.

Rule #2: If you are tempted to make conjuration an opposition school, see rule #1

Rule #3: If you think have an exception to rules #1 and #2, you don't.

Rule #4: If you are pretty sure you are right about that exception, you aren't.

Rule #5: No. Just, no.


I never ban either, they are two of the most important schools, next to transmutation and divination.

The best schools to give up are enchantment, necromancy, evocation, and sometimes illusion.


Abjuration includes most of your defensive magic and other spells that allow you to deal with magic. It also includes most traps and wards. Spells like dispel magic and various protection spells are all abjurations. Without it you will have less defenses vs other magic and have trouble getting rid of spells of other casters.

Conjuration is one of the most versatile schools because it is used to summon creatures. By summoning the right creature you can get access to a wide variety of magic. If you need to heal something there are a lot of things that you can summon that have healing magic. This does require a good deal of knowledge and preparation to be able to be used effectively. If you don’t know what abilities a creature has you won’t what is the best creature to summon. Also many GM dislike summoned creatures because it slows down combat so check with your party about how they feel about summons.

Conjuration also has a lot of good damage spells that do not require you to summon creatures. It may not have as many blasts as evocation but it has enough that you can usually have some sort of direct damage spell for every level. As several people have stated it also includes teleportation and creation spells.

Without knowing what your school of specialization is and what other school is going to be your other opposition school it is difficult to say which would be the better choice for an opposition school. It also depends on the type of wizard you want to play. For example if you are playing a combat focused evoker giving up abjuration with its defensive spells would probably not be a good idea. On the other hand if you are playing a subtle enchanter who rarely becomes directly involved in combat the versatility and utility of conjuration is probably going to be better.


Just to be sure everyone knows, "A wizard who prepares spells from his opposition schools must use two spell slots of that level to prepare the spell."
So it's not like you can't cast opposition spells. It's just inconvenient to do so.


These two schools are both versatile and useful. To pick one for opposition I would have to consider what capabilities the rest of the party had and what role I was expected to fill.

I should add that he will be an evoked thassilonian specialist. Both are prohibited schools.

My suggestion is thst you bring back Conjuration. Summoning aside, there arf a ton of useful and iconic spells in the school. Teleport, Dimension Door, Glitterdust. And even without making it your focus, summons eventually give you lots of useful spellcasting critters.

Losing either of those schools hurts. If it ever gets to be too much, talk to your GM about retraining into a normal evoker.


You tend to never want to give up Conjuration.

It is one of the more powerful schools in the game. Giving Up abjuration can seem tough with the loss of Dispel magic and a few other choice goodies but you can get by without them.

The Best School to Prohibit/Opposition is Enchantment. It is a all or nothing school. You will miss Heroism but that is about it. All the offensive spells require you to be FOCUSED on the school. If your spell does not stick then you waste a spell for the day. Which can be terrible.

The best Thessalonian specialty has to be Gluttony. Not only is Necromancy one of the more powerful schools in the game it gives up Enchantment which makes it a good choice.
