Working on my submission. Are revisions of characters from previous campaigns acceptable?

For the Field Agent, can the Rogue Talent be taken multiple times? And do the Sneak Attack dice increase like a rogue's would?

Certainly.

The Delver RAW is unclear on that point if I remember correctly and I don't think I made it any more clear, let's cap taking Rogue Talent at 2 times.

Hmm, bummer. Okay.

How about the Sneak Attack dice? Do they increase like a rogue's or is it 1d6 for the life of the character?

Aria Gest wrote:
Interesting: Chronicler 2, Field Agent 4, Delver 2, Savant 2, Student of War 2. I guess I was expecting more Savants.

Savant seems the strongest option, given how spells incline the balance in PF, though I finally chose Field Agent for flexibility. Makanaky just wasn't a caster in my mind.

The talent says it functions 'exactly like the rogue's', so I'm inclined to think it escalates.

Also, about a previous question from me about Crushing Thrower and flanking, I've been researching a bit and found nothing. However, I think flanking from range could potentially be too strong. There's a Rogue Talent which allows you to flank from 10 ft, but at least it requires a talent and it's only 10 ft.

So, to my memory and the like. Whip users are the rare exception to being allowed to flank at longer distances (Except for in the instance of reach but then you aren't exactly extending your flanking distance.)

See Improved Whip Mastery.

But that all is part of a Feat tree and requires multiple feats to get to this point.

Anything beyond flanking from 10ft seems to be a size limitation/reach limitation.

Even the feat tree for Snap Shot is altered to not allowed 'ranged' flanking. (It does allow ranged AoO thought very limited.)

I would agree with your assumption that ranged flanking would and could get too strong.

hmm, I was thinking sneak attack might be something you would have to purchase multiple times for each additional die you want. So at 4th level you can get 1d, at 8th you can purchase it again for an additional die, etc.
The "works like the rogue" clause I believe is meant to mean 'the circumstances under which it works.' Other archetypes for example that give sneak attack may have very different increases, like every 4, 5 or 6 levels (the bardic sandman for example)

In 3.x the attacker could flank from any range, but the flanking partner had to have the target in a threatened square directly in between them.

I haven't had a chance to look it up in pathfinder, but it was rather obscure so I doubt they changed it.

Alright so looking into this a bit more, cause I was curious.

Flanking rule verbatim:

Flanking
When making a melee attack, you get a +2 flanking bonus if your opponent is threatened by another enemy character or creature on its opposite border or opposite corner.

When in doubt about whether two characters flank an opponent in the middle, trace an imaginary line between the two attackers’ centers. If the line passes through opposite borders of the opponent’s space (including corners of those borders), then the opponent is flanked.

Exception: If a flanker takes up more than 1 square, it gets the flanking bonus if any square it occupies counts for flanking.

Only a creature or character that threatens the defender can help an attacker get a flanking bonus.

Flanking specifically states melee attack in the wording of the actual combat definition.

However, Snap shot and Improved Snap Shot allows for a Ranged attacker to threaten squares...which allows the ranged attacker to threaten squares. However this does not override the requirement of needing to make a melee attack to receive the bonus. Snap shot and Improved snap shot allows you to help give a melee attack a flank.

Specific overrides general.

Snap shot is specifically for threatening with ranged weapons as though they were melee weapons. It counts as threatening with melee for every rule that requires threatening in melee.

Right...I thought I said that. Maybe my wordage was off but I was trying to specify that it allows to threaten as if melee...but doesn't change the type of attack that is being offered to mimic a melee attack. Therefore while it allows you to help flank, it does not allow you the +2 attack bonus for flanking as it is still a ranged attack.

Edit:
APG FAQ

So this is paizo's personal statement on the matter as far as flanking as ranged.

If you read the Gang Up feat clarification, you'll see that the Pathfinder Devs have specifically taken a stance saying that Flanking specifically refers only to melee attacks.

So while Snap Shot and Improved Snap Shot allow you to threaten and thus can provide a flanking bonus to a melee attacker...the ranged attackers still do not benefit themselves from the bonus or from a 'flank'.

I wished they had made this statement in their Ultimate Combat FAQ as well, but I think because they made such a distinction in their APG FAQ they felt it was a moot point.

That said, there is always House Rules...so SS still always has the final say in such discussions.

So they did change it then. Kinda sad really, flanking actually makes more sense for a ranged attacker.

Well, we're talking about Crushing Thrower, which is a SoM Talent, so they might have had different standards in mind, but anyway.

So I reread the feat your talking about....and So if you got Improved Snap shot....and used it in conjunction with crushing Thrower....I could see you getting 15ft ranged flank attack.

The two niche feat descriptions would work juuuuusssttttt right wording wise to make it work. However, it's far easier to just get armor with Righteous Might, or someone in the group with Enlarge person and use a reach weapon to get the same thing without a HUGE feat tax.

If we were talking best bang for buck on getting some kind of stupid Flanking reach? I'd go Fighter Whip master with Righteous Might or Enlarge person. 30ft reach is noice.

I could also see getting lesser belt of mighty hurling as another way to save on feats? And possibly Greater at later stages....Could be ballin.

But I think I'll stop randomly tangenting at this point and speculating...as this is SS's recruitment and decision making and not mine >.< and I already feel like I'm tossing too much thoughts out myself.

Food for thought, flanking plus aid another on attack.

Just wondering, are you accepting beginners to bother pathfinder and post by play?

Yes. :-)

Busy weekend folks, I'll get to open questions, especially the ranged flanking question during the week!

Cheers just wanted to be sure before I started designing a character :D

Damned thing keeps switch between alias XD

I was lead to believe I could possible still put in for the recruitment, so I would like to be in for the ruins, which from what i am reading I need to also be a chronicler as well? Gesalt rules if I am correct? Maybe i'll get in this time.

Still working up Varloo...he's all but done in my head. I just need to get him 'down on paper' so to speak!

=)

Gestalt yes.

I converted the Pathfinder Society PRCs to Base Classes to Gestalt with. You can pick any of the 5 you prefer. Feel free to use a prior submission. :-)

You also need to select a Pathfinder, the full creation rules are on I believe the 3rd page of Recruitment.

I'll finish making it gesalt if i'm picked. I'll go with Eando Kline however as the mentor who helped me become a rogue/ranger.

This is the character I will be using. However since you graced us with a 25 point buy, i may go ranger, but either way, itll be an aquatic elf chronicler. everything else I'll shape up once picked.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Alright, I thought a recopilation of things would be helpful, so...

Storyteller Shadow's Ruins of Azlant Gestalt Special Character Creation

Character Build:
1. 25 Point Buy.
2. Max HP at 1st level (roll OR 1/2+1 per level afterwards).
2.1 Max Starting Wealth from the Non-Pathfinder Class (see here).
3. Background Skills.
4. Automatic Bonus Progression will be utilized. Bonuses start at Second Level.
5. Skill Unlocks will be used.
6. Three Traits (+1 more with a drawback) One trait will be a Campaign Trait (Eagle Knight Recruitment and Pathfinder Recruit are eliminated as selections), the second Trait will be PC choice, the third Trait will be a Pathfinder Society Scion Trait (see below).
7. Hero Points will be utilized.

Home Rules for Hero Points:

1) One permanent Hero Point may be used to avoid a final death scenario allowing a narrow cinematic escape,

2) One temporary Hero Point may be used if you are between -1 and -9 hit points to stabilize yourself to prevent further blood loss,

3) Temporary Hero Points may be expended to power Feats. These grant a lasting bonus for a one scene or one round duration depending on the feat description,

4) One temporary Hero Point grants a character a chance to supplement their d20 roll by 1d6 and add the result (whatever it was - no re-roll) to the d20 result,

Progression system:
Level 1-10 1d6,
Level 11-20 2d6,
Level 21-?? 3d6. and

5) No more than one Hero Point may be expended per round.

Optional rules mostly in the form of New Feats for Hero Points:

Arcane Surge (Prerequisites - Arcane Class) (Allows wielder to increase a spell DC by 3 for 1 round by expending a Hero Point),

Attune Item (Prerequisites - A Weapon of Legacy) (Allows wielder to expend one hero point to add +3 to attack and damage for the scene with chosen item),

Defensive Ward (Prerequisites - Dodge) (Allows wielder to expend one hero point to give yourself a +3 Luck bonus to AC for the scene),

Divine Surge (Prerequisites - Divine Class) (Allows wielder to increase a spell DC by 3 for 1 round by expending a Hero Point),

Heroic Feat (Prerequisites - None) (Any saving throw successfully made 10 points above an effects DC automatically allows the character to regain 1 used Hero Point),

Heroic Grace (Prerequisite - None) (Allows wielder to expend one hero point to add +1 to all saving throws or +3 to one saving throw for one scene),

Heroic Quickness (Prerequisites - Improved Initiative) (Allows wielder to expend one hero point to add +3 to Initiative checks),

Manifesting Surge (Prerequisites - Psionic Class) (Allows wielder to increase a powers save DC by 3 for 1 round by expending a Hero Point).

8. Finally, the build will be Gestalt. One side of the build MUST be from the following Pathfinder Society "Base Classes" (see below). The other is a class of the PCs choice.

Note that all Third Party Products are available though I have the right to deny anything that seems to be unbalanced.

Races will be somewhat restricted and must be approved by me if they are "unusual".

Recruitment will end Tuesday September 5th @ 10 pm eastern time (that should be Wednesday September 6th @ 3 am GMT for us Europeans xD).

I will be accepting 8 applicants.

Pathfinder Society Base Classes
Pathfinder Society Scion Traits

Clarifications:

-The Wayfinder Bonuses are active from the beginning, you don't need to own the mentioned Ioun Stone (see here).
Also, a link to all Ioun Stones here, so you can check bonus types and specific text in case it changes.

-Knowledge: HX = Knowledge: History (see here).

-Pathfinder Savant will use the Characteristic associated with the class chosen from where he picks his spells, i.e. Charisma if you pick the Sorcerer/Wilder spell lists, Intelligence for Wizard/Psion or Wisdom for Cleric/Druid (see here).

-Field Agent: Know thy Enemy and Sneak Attack can be taken several times (see here). That leads to believe that Sneak Attack only scales if picked several times.

-In this post, Storyteller Shadow points to a list of approved unusual races.

-Field Agent: Rogue Talent can be picked twice (see here).

I think that's it for now.

Tell me shadow, are you allowing race options from Blood of the sea and Aquatic adventures?

Also, only one person is eligible per Scion... so if you choose the same Scion as someone else, you are competing head-to-head.

Updated Scion list to go along with that:

Party People,

I just saw this thread today, and it looks phenomenal. I did a quick search, and I didn't see any mention of the Samsaran race.

Assuming it's allowed, I thought a Samsaran Speaker for the Past Shaman would be a really fun character. "What's that? Oh yeah. My 4th wife Karen, from 380 years ago, says we should take a left up here. She's always great with directions..."

The back side of the Gestalt is a little tricky. Savant would be fun with the Samsaran magical affinity, and mystic past life dovetailing with a secondary casting ability. "My eleventy-greatth uncle used to cast Haste all the time. I think we could use it now."

On the other hand, field agent would be a great way to further diversify an incredibly diverse character. "My daughter from my 8th husband used to design locks. I think you can open the door with one of these old keys. Let me find it here."

Also, I didn't see any mention of crafting. If we're going to be stranded on a distant island with limited resources, it seems like making our own stuff would be pretty useful.

Final question, if a Field Agent (base class) takes greater spell casting, what happens? Does this allow caster level to exceed hit dice?

TL,DR:

Player: Ben
Character: Tempus Proavus XLII
Gestalt: Speaker for the Past Shaman / Savant or Field Agent
Race: Samsaran
Scion Trait: Janira Gavix (I can't believe she was left. She's awesome! Am-I-Right?)
Role: Buffer/De-Buffer + Crafting (if allowed)

Deity: Shyka (the Many)

I'm pretty sure it does not. I think this ability is really only useful if you multiclass on the non-PRC side of the gestalt.

I really wanted to play this, fascinating premise and brilliant storyteller, but I would not have the time. But it is a story I will be following.

Damn, cool stuff here so far. If I can't decide who to pick I might just run multiple tables.

Grand Lodge

Question number 4: Can psychic magic be added to the Savant list? It doesn't seem that different from the other primary casters, and is Paizo material (vs. Psion or Wilder).

Thank you :-)

P.S. For more character theme, I was looking to make Tempus a wandering cartographer. He lives each lifetime in a new area, learning as much as he can while documenting his travels.

Knowledge Nature, Knowledge Geography, Knowledge History, Survival, and Perception would most definitely be on his list of key skills.

Thanks!

Ben

I noticed SoM test rules were allowed, what about SoP?

Yes.

I finally got Varloo's basic history written up. It's just posted in a spoiler for now. Need to finish up my crunch and see how he's doing...

Working 12 hour+ shifts are NOT helping my PbP games!

Just 12? Last week, this week, and next week (possibly longer if we don't get a replacement) I've been working back to back full shifts with 2 hour break between and one has a 1 hour long commute. I get about 4 hours before repeating.

Kinda why zizi isn't done yet.

Also, how do I download the custom classes?

I've got an idea of whag they do by looking at the prestige classes, but the google docs don't display properly (for me, phone only person) and there doesn't seem to be a download link.

PM me your email address and I'll send you the docs.

So, I have an idea I want to run by you. I'm interested in a Relic Channeler Medium, who hails from Taldor/Cheliax, or one of their colonies. Basically, anywhere that descended from the ancient Azlanti after Earthfall. He carries ancient artifacts of Azlant that he knows basically nothing at all about, but they carry immense value in his family and he has been fascinated with Azlant since he was a child. However, since spirits are actual dead people that could actually know something about Azlant, I wanted to make sure this was cool with you before I started building.

Proceed!

I think I'm about done with Aria's build, I'll flesh out her personality a bit more though.

Between today and tomorrow I'll address all open questions.

I'll be away/unavailable starting this Monday through Labor Day.

I will be closing Recruitment at 5 PM Monday September 4th. That day I plan on making selections. I MAY run more than 1 table but I rarely do so for 1 AP so no guarantee there. We will be starting with Prologues then Interviews then the AP will begin.

How about the Sneak Attack dice? Do they increase like a rogue's or is it 1d6 for the life of the character?

Sneak Attack increases if you select it multiple times.

It should be noted thag a rogue's sneak attack doesn't automatically increase. In fact, some archetypes actually replace a rogue's sneak attack improvements at various levels. Unlike some abilities, sneak attack has to be called out for each improvement, but automatically increasing abilities instead just mention the increase schedule in the description without calling it out on the abilities list each level.

Given the text of the Crushing Thrower talent (Equipment Sphere):

You may choose to treat your ranged attacks with thrown weapons as melee attacks, using your melee attack bonus, including Strength bonus, feats, and other modifiers to determine your attack bonus as normal, but applying standard modifiers for range penalties. Attacking into melee, through cover, and other situations that penalize ranged attacks incurs the standard penalties. In addition, you may apply 1-1/2 times your Strength bonus to damage if you wield the thrown weapon with two hands, and you can use the Power Attack feat with your thrown weapon attacks.

(1) Do I get to flank if I throw my weapon in melee range with a friend on the opposite side? Does that mean I would get to Sneak Attack?

(2) Also, the Rogue Talent option on Field Agent Training can only be taken once, but can we spend a feat to get Extra Rogue Talent? I know we don't really have the prerequisites, but thought it was worth asking.

OK.

(1) I emphasize thrown weapons above purposefully. This WILL not work with a Bow or Crossbow. Provided that you are Flanking with a friend on the opposite side I'll allow it and the Sneak Attack damage will apply. The range increment will be 10' and will not increase without a Feat of some sort geared to improve this skill specifically.

I'm tempted to say NO after looking into it but I'll allow it. If it seems to be unbalancing things I of course reserve the right to reverse my ruling or just give it to a bunch of my NPCs for fun :-).

(2) No, the specific Feats that can be taken are listed :-)
