Best Wizard Spells in Paizo's Horror & Occult books

Advice

Hello Everyone,

This upcoming week I'll finally have access to all of Paizo's recent Occult & Horror books (the hardcover main books & softcover supplemental books).

My 12th level Wizard will have some significant campaign downtime to add new spells from all those Paizo publications to her main spellbook. So I'm curious what the consensus is on the the most popular, the best (and even the worst) Wizard spells from all those books. Any info on any of the idiosyncratic spells would be helpful too.

I've been poking around the online descriptions of some of these spells, but it will be a lot handier to peruse them in paper book form.

Thanks for your help and Happy Gaming!

Boneshaker is a cool single-target, 2nd-level spell that has nicely-scaling damage plus 5' of forced movement, and doubles as an Undead-control spell.

Waves of Blood is a 3rd-level, AoE Bullrush that can also cause Sickened in all creatures affected. There's a measly DC 10 Acrobatics check to avoid falling prone when they try to move for the round after, but I'd consider that a pleasant surprise if it stuck.

Condensed Ether is a 5th-level Wizard spell that makes for a neat alternative to Solid Fog (albeit at a 1-level-increase). It doesn't obscure vision, but it does halve movement and negate normal ranged attacks (20% miss chance vs. rays!), so it's also like a Wind Wall, but ironically doesn't block fogs and gasses, which you could use to good effect to further hamper advancing enemies (Cloudkill?)

Grand Lodge

Purge Spirit is a winner. "This spell affects astrally projected creatures, ethereal creatures, haunts, incorporeal creatures, mediums channeling a spirit, and phantoms, and at the GM’s discretion can affect other spirits or creatures made of ectoplasm.

Incorporeal creatures take full damage from purge spirit."

Sovereign Court

Boneshaker is really rocking it for my Asmodean Advocate cleric; finally a low-level attack spell that screams "dark priest". But it's none too shabby for wizards either. It's very damaging for its spell level.

Good for witches too

Meh. For waves of blood to knock someone prone they have to fail a reflex save, then you have to beat their CMD. For it to sicken them they have to also fail a fort save. It's a 30' cone so you have to be too close for comfort, with no allies betwen you and the targets. There are better ways to knock someone down.

An actually good spell is horrific doubles. It's mirror image upgraded with a shaken fear effect & wis damage on those who destroy your images; combine with another fear effect of your choice to send enemies running, or just take advantage of their lowered will save to do something really nasty to them.

Edit: Oh yeah, Occult * spells. Explode head is a spell with style. Shadow enchantment (& greater) are versatile spells along the lines of shadow conjuration. Hypercognition may be handy occasionally to be sure of making knowledge checks.

Back on Horror Adventures spells, assume appearance is a 1 day/level disguise.

These are all terrific suggestions. Thank you, everyone!

I especially like a number of these suggested spells in that they have multiple utility uses.

Explode head is kewl but underwhelming
I'm waiting for someone to do something exciting with Rend body.

I'm pretty sure the Reflex save is an error. It's not mentioned anywhere in the spell description - just the save line. I think there may have been a switch either to or from the mentioned Acrobatics check concerning the Reflex save. I guess ask your GM, and if they say that it works as avr said, then yes, it's no good.

I'm rather fond of the Possession line of spells (including Riding Possession) from Occult Adventures. They are great supplemental spells for a Necromancer.
There is a whole thread devoted to using the Object Possession line of spells to pretend you are a Mech-Pilot.

Of the horror spells, Slough is pretty terrifying, Grasping Corpse is flavorful for low level necromancers, and Symbol of Exsanguination and the Curse Terrain line of spells look interesting.

I'll second the advocation of Horrific Doubles. I've used it quite a bit and it's quite a versatile spell.

Curse Terrain sounds ....... intriguing. Any BBEG worth his salt will be going nuts with that spell (so will PC's with stronghold).

Silver Crusade

Possession is the best spell in the game (if you can dispel their Protection from X first).

Just used Boneshaker and Horrific Doubles. These really were key to winning the encounter. Great suggestions!!

Especially if your GM lets you use the Penetrating Possession feat with it!

Just blast right through those protection spells. :D

Aversion is a very nasty spell. Especially if you hit the target's armor so they have to try and get out of it if they fail.

Telekinetic Maneuver mimics the stronger combat function of telekinesis at a level lower.

Contagious Zeal is a good buff for longer fights, especially if you are also summoning monsters after casting the buff.

What books in particular have these spells? I have most of the books, but don't see the spells mentioned.

Links for the lazy:

Purge Spirit

Boneshaker
Contagious Zeal
Explode Head

Note: The SRD was having problems, so I linked to AoN on the ones I could.
