Unfortunately, this home belonged to a group of larcenous criminals that nonetheless adopted Rayne and raised her as their own. These were common bandits, but they sought riches not from holding travellers up on the road, but in waylaying the slow-moving river barges that plied the Marideth River. As early as she can remember, Rayne was sent into the sluggish, ice cold water with a dagger between her teeth, so that she could sever anchor lines.
Due to her elven blood, Rayne grew up through several generations of bandits, and the kindness afforded to her by her original benefactors was largely replaced by the cruelty of the band’s new leader—a murderous mastermind named Rawley. Only a core group of like-minded friends kept Rayne tied to the group which she once considered home. While once they would try to keep their victims safe from harm while taking their things, Rayne’s band was now injuring and killing without remorse.
That ended when Rawley picked the wrong boat heading towards Tamran. What he assumed was a barge loaded down with valuable furniture from the workshops of Phaendar was actually a troop transport containing a unit of Ironfang soldiers. Using their unique fighting style and iron discipline, the hobgoblins massacred the bandits. Defeated and broken, the remaining members of her band scattered into the woods. Most of Rayne’s friends were killed or captured, and facing a life without them under the reign of Rawley proved more than she could bear. After she was sure she wasn’t seen or followed, Rayne slipped away and made her way to the nearest town: Phaendar.
