Breath of the Wild timeline discussion

This conversation started in another thread, but it was getting long, so now it's over here.

When do you think BotW occured in the timeline? Personally, I think it was middle of the Downfall timeline, between the Oracle Games and Zelda 1.

Just me then?

One of the first indications I had for this position is the Master Sword itself. Unlike the Prequel and Child timelines, it's not in the temple of time/temple of Hylia. Its location in the lost woods west of Death Mountain (as opposed to the southern Lost Woods) lines up with ALttP and ALBW.

Furthermore, there's the appearance of the sword. Corrosion is noticeable on the surface in the logo and trailers. Since the blade has often been stored in less-than-ideal conditions before without corroding, I interpret this as the sword is not at full power. Unlike it's depowered state in WW, where the shape regressed to the goddess sword, the form indicated it should be at full strength. I think this further puts it in the Downfall timeline, where the Master Sword in ALttP and ALBW has less raw power then the contemporary level of magic, despite said level being far below the magic used when the blade was forged. I further guess that the Lost Woods moving to the location of the sword is because the sword is leaking energy into the environment, accelerating plant growth and causing planar distortions. Its now possible that the corrosion is from the extra material added during these two games, and the true Blade of Evil's Bane is as pristine as ever (it was not rusted, but still unpowered in these two games).

One of the common reasons I see for the Adult timeline is the existence of Koroks. While they haven't been confirmed for any other timeline, they're known to be alternate forms of the Kokiri. Since the Kokiri themselves only appear circa OOT (WW sage Fado included), I don't think the existence of the Koroks disproves any timeline not immediately following OOT.

I recently heard a lot of people thing it's child timeline. This is news to me, as nobody else I've talked to thinks that. Any supporters of that notion care to explain their reasoning?

Both not on topic and full of spoilers, but I felt the need to say this:

Spoiler:
I'm disappointed in the ganon fight. Not from a gameplay perspective (although it's nowhere near TP's level), but the design of the first phase in particular.

As a preface to this rant, I love magitech. I love when magic and technology are combined to something greater than either alone. I think of magic as another force in the universe, and should be used for technology like any other. It sickens me how often the two are shunted into opposite corners, or their joining is meant to seem unnatural. I was already of the opinion that the main reason why the battle 100 years before BotW was lost on the Hylian side was they didn't spend enough time understanding the Guardian's operations and programming. I mean, what did you expect from antivirus software 10 000 years out of date? But, because I hold to a theory that the Gerudo revered the desert artifacts dating to the same period, I was expecting Ganon to have taken control by better understanding the tech than the Hylians. I get there, and I see a haphazard mongrel of discarded parts. How bad were the Hylians to have their tech taken by this?

It feels too much like the devs wanted all the major tech to be evil, an obstacle to be surmounted by magic. Not only is this aggravating to me personally, but Zelda used to be a great example of working magitech.

I don't think this Hyrule is worth fighting for anymore.

I disagree with everything you said.

Not because I actually do, or I know what you're talking about. But because someone has to. :-)

With respect captain, the discussion that originally spawned this thread was two-way, but my debating partner seems to not have followed me here.

Oh I know. :-)

Just trying to give it a nudge, I was. :-)

Is this the place for gripes about the game or is there another chance thread for it?

I haven't seen another thread and I just ranted about the end boss, so I guess this is the place.
