I spoke with Erik and he agrees that we should post an update. I'm not sure when that will occur, but its on his radar to address.

Thanks, Sara. It would be interesting to hear how things are progressing (to the extent that such information is free to share).

Here here!

Get Diane Duane if you can, her Harbinger trilogy for Star*Drive was very enjoyable. She also wrote a sizable amount of Star Trek stuff.

Guys, don't get too excited. An update could as well be the announcement of the line/subscription cancellation as it is that new books are coming out soon. (though I'm hoping it's more books!)

I will offer the power of positive thinking Jhaeman...the announcement is a dozen more novels...and SF fiction too...gonna believe this as HARD as I can :)

I suspect the announcement is going to be “we have nothing to announce at this time”.

People asked to be kept in the loop, even if nothing has changed and how likely is it that anything changed in the last month? (I’m guessing that Christmas isn’t traditionally the season for book licensing deals and November 30 was the last, semi-official word that Paizo were still looking for a publishing partner).

I'm expecting "nothing to announce". But that's okay as long as they're still looking.

I was out sick so I'm behind a bit. I'm working up text for several lines that have had releases spread out or not consistent. Each of those lines gets Current/Last Release, Next/Future Release, and a status report.

So as not to keep you all on edge, Tales is in the same position it was previous, I'm just writing this all up for several lines in a more formal way.

Erik Mona was interviewed on the latest Know Direction podcast.

He said that they were not getting any better distribution or sales with Tor than before. They want a partner who can improve this.

Also, people leaving has disrupted the hunt for a new partner. PF Tales doesn't even have an editor for the line at the moment.

And, as a low-profit line, it's not first ont he list to get sorted.

But at least it’s still in their thoughts ^w^

FWIW. You can find the full interview on Youtube, it's Know Direction 171 and the PF Tales question is asked at around the 43m56s mark.

Erik also mentioned there is no plans for a Starfinder Tales until they have resolved the Pathfinder Tales distribution issue.

Also there are a couple of big projects they are trying to get through and "once we get done through those we going to take a very serious hack at trying to figure out what to do about this fiction".

There was no mention about the missing Audible versions of last 3 released books.

I thank Erik for his candor.

The missing audio books for the final Tor books are something that MacMillan Audio has the sole right to produce at this time. If folks want those, they need to convince Tor that they're worth producing. At some point in the future, these books may be available for someone else to produce audiobook versions of, but until then, the ball is in Tor's court.

Is there any chance that the remaining uncompiled web fiction will ever see the light of day as e-books?

This is probably none of my business, but why have so many people left? Also, glad for the update, even if it isn't what I was hoping to hear.

Wes and James left in order to pursue solo writing careers, if I recall correctly. Jessica apparently landed in video gaming industry. Which, coincidentally, pays far more than PnP RPG gaming industry does, leaving the latter very much a "I work here because I love it" thing.

There is good news in the interview which is that they have five or six books ready to go once this does become unstuck.

And I agree that Erik's honesty in the interview was welcome.

And, closer to home, is there any chance of a PFS chronicle sheet for the final Tor books?

To be clear, Erik did NOT say that people leaving disrupted the hunt for a new partner in the interview. Also, there is an "editor" for the line lined up (when James left, I was told who that would be, and I have complete confidence in that person's abilities, but I'm not really able to say who that is.) What Erik said was that this person is doing other things, but is ready to step into that role. The fact is, there really is nothing to edit at this point (the orphaned books are in various stages of done-ness, some are complete except for cover art and back-matter, others need a final edit) but until the line is going again, naming an editor for the line is a bit like naming a pilot for a plane that is sitting in a hanger.

Hope that clears the waters a bit.

And yes, I have books that are orphaned here, so I have a vested interest in seeing things move forward.

Thanks Mark, that's good to know. I've already tweeted @torbooks & @MacmillanAudio asking about it.

I'm guessing that Tor/Macmillan Audio aren't required to make audio book versions of PF Tales, otherwise they'd exist already.

My fingers are still crossed. I am hoping for good news soon.

I also would love to see the rest of the Web Fiction and AP Fiction get published as Short Fiction ePubs. I would buy them. Granted at a rate of about one a month, but I would work my way through them. I own all the ones that have been published so far.

My biggest cause for concern when Paizo announced that they were partnering with Tor was that they didn't bother responding to my email asking where I could buy their ebooks. Their products seemed to be regionally locked at the time.

If they don't feel the need to answer customers actually trying to buy their books, I had my doubts that they'd actually be helpful towards promoting Paizo's stuff either. Sadly it seems I was right to be dubious. It also seems their customer service and responsiveness as a company group hasn't improved over the last few years.

Yes, I would also love that and I would probably buy them as soon a they came out. Unfortunately, I don't think it very likely that this is going to happen.

I so bummed you guys have left this line mouldering for over a year now with literally no update. I get it's not a priority, but that's a year's worth of sales you've forfeited.

It's a real shame; I've basically written off any chance of more PF Tales at this point.

It seems to me that, having made the switch from publisher to licensor, they found that the Tor license didn’t work out and they are now left with not many good options (at least nothing that’ll happen quickly).

Ideally, they’d find another publisher to step into Tor’s place, but that’s presumably slow. Plus they’re now not marketing “an established product line of novels with a proven track record of x subscription sales per month” so much as a series which didn’t work out for the last publisher.

They could restructure their staff (again) and increase the editing resources available in house, but given the reasons for switching to a licensor approach are probably still true, that’s a big effort for what is hopefully a short term problem. (I believe they don’t like to hire people without decent long term prospects - so adopting this approach would likely impact on their other products).

Maybe with PF’s hiatus, the editing staff might be able to step into the breach for a few novels in the coming year(?) All in all, I can’t see any obvious, perfect solution (beyond “find a publisher who wants to take it up” which is going to happen when it happens, unfortunately).

I’m very disappointed in this line’s absence (as with the modules line) but I don’t think it’s fair to suggest Paizo have “left them mouldering”. I suspect most of the activity in seeking a solution just hasn’t borne fruit.

Any official news on the status of the Pathfinder Tales novels?

Ready to buy again as soon as they're published.

I purchased and enjoyed every single one that went to print, regardless of the size or format.

I had a conversation with Erik Mona at uk games expo yesterday. Apparently there is some movement and paizo will have a presence at some big upcoming book publishers fair trying to get the pathfinder tales line "out of a place with neither darkness or light" as he put it, but did give the impression that pathfinder 2e is diverting a lot of attention internally away from the line.

He also joked during a panel that archetypes never made it into novels and that if they did they might have sold better. Which implies sales figures might be part of the reason that the lines in limbo atm.

So, they're on the lookout for publishers, but Tales isn't a priority right now. I would hope that, with the rumors that some changes are coming with 2e, the changes will be reflected in the novels, too, so we can see them in an actual story.

It takes time to write a book, and time to design, test, redesign and publish a new rule set. I would not expect to see PF2E oriented novels until much closer to the release of PF2E, if not after that.

I believe the line’s cancellation happened “midstream”, so to speak. As in, they have several novels lined up in various stages of writing/editing. Presumably, once they find a publisher, those will from the first few in the relaunch.

I also think the plan is to keep the flavour/lore of Golarion almost entirely unchanged between editions anyhow. As such, I don’t think there’s going to be much discernible difference between a PF1 novel and a PF2 novel.
