Where's the street cred?

Paizo General Discussion

Dear paizo team,

Over the years I've had a few paizo accounts and emails but my legitimate name has remained the same.

In 2013 i posted on this board a thread titled: "psionics without a system".

Just recently i got back into pathfinder and i was stunned to find a fully fleshed out set of rules that mirrored my thread.

That supplement is titled occult adventures.

Hey wheres my street cred?

You mean this thread? It doesn't seem tied to you, unless you have two accounts, which is against the terms of service. I also don't see how Occult Adventures is related to that thread.

This FAQ may enlighten you further.

AM DIFFERENT BARBARIAN THAN "AM BARBARIAN", AND AM THINK "PURR-MAH-NEHNT" LIFESTICK BETTER THAN "TEHM-POUR-AIRY" LIFESTICK. AM NOT GOOD AT "AIR-ITH-MEH-TICK," SO AM JUST GET LIFESTICK THAT WORK ALL TIMES.

AM ALSO WANT LIFESTICK BIG, SO AM SMASH CASTIES LIKE PANCAKES WITH IT.

OR TURN CASTY INTO "PURR-MAH-NEHNT" LIFESTICK TO SMASH OTHER CASTIES WITH.

OR, BUY "AM BARBARIAN" BIGGER LANCE TO SMASH CASTIES WITH. MANY OPTIONS OUT THERE FOR BARBARIAN!

I keep fogetting my sign in info on older accounts its not purposeful i just have bad memory and tend to lock myself out of my email accounts and then can't retreive passwords.

Where does your disclaimer say you can't say thankyou you jerk. I'm a real world monk I'm not looking for money. I just like common courtesy when i do something that helps others.

You can contact customer service to get your previous accounts recovered rather than generate new ones, if there was anything you wished to be able to access on them. Not really a requirement for you, it sounds like, but I know that losing access to my downloads would be a serious inconvenience.

As for your original thread, there really is no way to say they used your idea. Independent teams can come to similar conclusions without having been inspired by each other. Look at Trailblazer for an example of something that was developed and released about the same time as Pathfinder. You'll see a number of similarities.

Here is some helpful advice from a similar complaint.

I think it's very unlikely that they got the psychic class from your thread. Those things from that thread are pretty obvious mechanics if your intent is to make a psion class without making a psionics subsystem.

When I was six years old, I wrote to SEGA saying they should make a game with gameplay revolving around Sonic the Hedgehog rescuing animals from robotification. SEGA responded by making me sign a contract. A few years later, Sonic 3D Blast was released. Yet, I wasn't in the game's credits. What gives, SEGA?!

As long as your idea is posted somewhere public it's no longer yours.
If they inspired on your idea to create a class (and I'm not saying they did) they had the right to do so.
Personally, if they published something that was my idea I'd be glad as I'm not planning to get rich with my roleplaying stuff. Did you want to make some profit? Because if you did, you should have sold it instead of posting it. If you didn't you haven't lost anything.

So wait, they own all my aliases!!

So much for the greatest ensemble cast movie ever! Oceans 400. Now I'll have to get Matt Damon to play Julia Roberts!

I have seen people complain about this policy and I don't get it. Ideas are cheap, everybody has lots of them (people who work in creative industries in particular). Developing an idea into a product that sells is the real challenge.

Also, I'm not a lawyer, but the way I understand it, you still own your comments, you just don't have the exclusive rights anymore. So within these limitations, you are free to develop your ideas into a product of your own if that is something that you are really interested in.

Like Amanuensis said above - maybe should have developed it and gone 3pp on your own or partnered with a 3pp, then you'd have more of a leg.

Not meant to discourage you - keep those creative juices flowing; just take action on them the right way to get the cred and $$$ you might be looking for is all...

In February 2013, I posted a thread containing my homebrew version of the barbarian's rage class feature. In August 2014, I posted some ideas in a thread about a revised version of trap sense called danger sense. In April 2015, Paizo released a great title called Pathfinder Unchained that contained a rage and danger sense that are similar to mine. I posted the idea on the message board (which makes them Paizo property) but I could decide that my ideas were taken. I think we can acknowledge that danger sense is a better name because it has broader applications, and that the new rage fixes problems that had been obvious for many years. It makes sense to me that I wasn't the only person thinking these things (also for years). While I would love to belive that the ideas came from me, they are not unique enough that no one else could have had the same thoughts.

I'm pretty stunned that there's an idea of cred regarding this stuff to begin with. The only reason i know Jacobs name is that he's referenced so much when people go after RAI. I've even linked an author who chimed in on a thread to talk about their RAI and cant for the life of me remember their name.

Weirdly, I have actually had people in my neighbourhood come up to me and say things like "Hey, you're the guy who made x homebrew right? That stuff was cool." So it's not impossible to live in such a place.

Ahh, yeah. When I actually give my Paizo name out people go 'Wait, the barbarian guy?'

At that point I need to run a sense motive check because it's like an 80-20 spread of them going 'Awesome' or trying to tell me the thousands of ways they think I'm wrong and would never get away with it at their table.

I can't say my Paizo name has ever come up in conversation.

It's also hard to get street cred when you don't have any cred to begin with. You gotta be an active member of the community to have a presence. That's really important. A lot of designers are known both by their works and their engagement with the community.

I would like to add my support for the troll cred, posting this at the beginning of a holiday weekend, maximum time before moderators are can see it. If you really wanted resolution or an explanation from folks who actually know, this is perhaps the worst thing to do. On the other claw, if you are trying to stir up some form of excrement witb your comments, then you have found a moderaterely effective way to do so.
