Ooh, from the first few posts, I love Secret of NIMH and Rock & Rule. Nicodemus is like the Gandalf of rodents, and Mok is wonderfully despicable.
Titan A.E. was also a riot. "I made this last night in my sleep. I don't know what it does. It has a button. Should I push it?"
Full quote btw,
Gune: Does this look familiar? Do you know what it is? Neither do I. I made it last night in my sleep. Apparently I used Gindrogac. Highly unstable.
Preed: Gune...
Gune: I put at button on it. Yes. I wish to press it, but I'm not sure what will happen if I do.

One of my favourite animated films that nobody else seems to have heard about is Red Line. All I know is that the film took about 11 years to complete, and it bankrupted the studio, but it is a treasure. It's the story of a racer in a futuristic space world that gets thrown into a battle between crime syndicates and the law, all while trying to prepare for the biggest race in the galaxy, the Red Line. The whole final act is like an exquisitely animated, super inventive episode of Wacky Races, and there wasn't a moment in that film I didn't like. I would super recommend it!

The only way I can watch that Transformers movie is with the volume down completely. Because the soundtrack was soooo bad, and it's going nearly every second of the movie.
*shudder*
What? what? what about The touch or dare to be stupid? we are talking about the original animated one with unicron (voiced by Orsen welles) and Galvatron (voiced by Leonard Nemoy).
If so we are two very different people.

All I remember is mid to late eighties hair metal pop s*@@. If I'm misremembering, I'll gladly go back and try again. It's been about fifteen years or so.

Everything is more awesome with a Stan Bush soundtrack. If I had the time and savvy I would re-cut the airport scene from "Civil War" to start "The Touch" as soon as Ant-Man hits his "reverse" button.

Some of these aren't so obscure or unpopular. Just say'n.
No one has mention Turok, Son of Stone so I'll throw that in there.
atheral |
There is also Song of the South and So Dear to My Heart though they may be more infamous than obscure. And really they arn't truly fully animated, the first is live action with animation and animated vignettes, and the second, it's more of a hybrid live action/animated like Pete's Dragon.
I've actually seen a VHS copy of Song of the South once. Had I known what it was at the time I would have bought it in a heart beat.

Fantasia, Fantasia 2000, and The Aristocats are obscure or unpopular?!? I hear people talking about the first two all the time. And when my son asked for The Aristocats on DVD for his birthday a few years ago (in 2012, perhaps?) a new special edition of it was just coming out. (Admittedly, I've never seen The Aristocats, although the DVD is still collecting dust on my shelf.)

Ah. Movies not successful at first count for this thread. Yeah, I forgot that you hinted at that when you mentioned the Transformer and G. I. Joe animated movies. Sorry about that.
Anyway, I'll agree about those Rankin/Bass ones, The Hobbit, The Flight of Dragons, and The Last Unicorn. Much as I love high fantasy novels, I seldom find a movie on the subject to be half-decent, so when I do, I feel compelled to give it honorable mention. I agree with Scythia; the Peter Jackson treatment of The Hobbit was too "expanded".
And I'll agree with Philo Pharynx too: I regard Cool World, despite the complete mess of a plot, to be quite possibly my favorite animated movie of all time, just for portraying such a fascinating world.

Personally I beleive that Song of the South is a very important film to have out there, but it needs to be prefaced with a message explaining the context of the film and the time that the story was written. It isn't a film that should be shoved under the rug and pretend never happened. Beyond simply the content of the film there are also some amazing film effects that were pioneered during the making of it.
Yes it is a troublesome film in some ways but it should be discussed not ignored.

A Scanner Darkly is a Phillip K Dick mindbender, if you're into that. It fills the Rule of Keanu by definition. (Movies where Keanu's character knows less about what's going on than somebody else tend to be better) I had my own Whoa! moment, when it showed the freeway off ramp I take every day.
You live in LA, too? I loved that movie! I didn't know the Rule of Keanu but it makes sense. I saw that movie when I was getting into a funk post-college. It was kind of a highlight for me because I went to the theater alone to avoid my sister's birthday party and her super-annoying happy friends, and it's just enough weird+downer that it made me feel better.
Movies: Record of Lodoss War (but does it count because it is more of mini-series than a 2-hour type movie?)

Oh, I just thought of another one, The Elm-Chanted Forest.
That was a trippy one. I don't remember much about it other than the really weird mushroom scene.
You mean I'm not the only person who saw that movie? I mostly remember it for the Cactus King and his guard formed of evil halberds with legs. Man was it bizarre.
Eric Hinkle |
Is it called the "Long Way North"?
That's it!
Also, let me add to my list the animated Rankin-Bass versions of The Hobbit and Return of The King. How I loved Smaug as a boy! And when they showed us Thorin dying I wept unashamedly.
And RoTK, yikes, but the horror in the scenes where Samwise forced his way past the Watchers; and when Grond broke the gates. And the way the Ring was shown tempting Sam and how Frodo fell to it was very well done.
Oh yes, did anyone here ever see the original My Little Pony animated film, with the Smooze?

I some what remember the MLP animated film but I thought the first movie was the one with Tirek as the villain? I also remember both Care Bears movies but none of these really stood the test of time for me. Though I still enjoy the Rainbow Brite movie.
I always looked at the logic battle in Flight of Dragons as the main character "doing some growing up and taking charge of his life" kind of thing.

Tirek was in the first MLP TV special. The movie came along later, and it had the Witches from Mount Gloom and the Smooze as villains.

Been a long time so I don't remember it that well, but having some more back and forth to me would be more interesting. By having the MC embrace both logic AND magic would prove the old wizard's(*voiced by Sherman Potter's actor) goal of inspiring imagination/hop the correct path. The MC keeps fighting for the dream, 'has faith' as it were.

Nice little gem I found once called "A Cat in Paris" The way the different characters moved was such a great expression of their personalities. Really great film if you can find it.
Also "The Triplets of Bellville", just brilliant
Do you mean Gay Purrree?
Maybe they changed the title.I haven't read the whole topic yet, but Over The Garden Wall was a tour de force for the blue bird.

A Cat in Paris is about this family Cat, who's other family (you know how cats have more than one family) is a cat burglar and goes with him on a job. The burglar then gives this braclet from one of the thefts to the Cat who then brings it to the little girl he lives with in the day. Her mother however is with the Police. Add in some Mobsters who would like their cut, a kidnapping, a chase and of course a meeting of the Cat's various peoples.
Cats tend to object to mobsters threatening their peoples
