Oh, is that another "Liberals are too politically correct" thinkpiece? Cute. Yeah, I'm sure that's why we lost. It's nothing to do with the upwelling of white nationalism, Clinton's weaknesses as a candidate, the Left's abandonment of economic justice, and clumsily 'balanced' media coverage. It's all because a few progressives criticized the most "precious snowflakes" of them all: comedians who can't take what they dish out.

Wow. Things are coming fast and furious.

The acting Attorney General, Sally Yates, had refused to defend the Muslim ban executive order in court. She's now been fired because she, and I quote, "betrayed the Department of Justice".

Meanwhile it turns out that House staffers had helped with the writing of the order, but had signed non-disclosure agreements and did so without informing the congresscritters they work for.

And we're not even two weeks into this Presidency. Hm.

Something probably worth keeping in mind is that the current President doesn't seem to have any ability to expand his base of support - excluding certain elected officials, people who oppose him now are not likely to change their minds given what's been happening, and even some of his supporters are feeling betrayed by the travel ban. He can really only go down from an already low position unless something truly unexpected happens - which is something of an issue, given the apparent need to always be perceived as winning, even if that means telling outright lies right to people's faces.

...

I, um, don't really see any situation in which this ends without significant trouble for a lot of people. v.v I wish it were otherwise, but yeah.

Draining the swamp proved to be a 'political promise'.

Unless you think draining the swamp and then filling it entirely with swamp monsters qualifies.

They don't even have a damn replacement and they fired her. As of now, we have no Attorney General.

It really won't matter.

His supporters are the only ones that matter, pretty soon they'll be all thats in the government (or enough of the government to do anything, which is close enough)

republicans are looking at a mid term election: oppose trump and you oppose his voters, who are the only ones energized enough to vote in the primaries in an off year election . America and the world may be against stuff like this but the voters aren't half the population the republicans aren't half the voters and the ones voting in the primary aren't half of those... whats left is estatic about a "muslim travel ban" and don't care about the asterix * doesn't actually apply to oil drilling places that actually HAVE sent us terrorists.

Trump's got every right-aligned billionaire on speed dial. He'll have one appointed (qualifications be damned) by tomorrow morning.

We've got one. He appointed a Federal Attorney\

He is naming Dana Boente, U.S. attorney for the eastern district of Virginia, to serve in her place.

And it's only for a couple days anyway

Thanks for this, KC and CS. I've family up in Albany who were wondering about this. And I may be moving to that area later in the year, so it's helpful for me as well.

As for myself, I am going to do something tonight in Northwest Indiana. My rabbi sent the following out on Facebook last night.

Quote:
Tomorrow evening clergy and lay leaders of the Islamic Center of Highland IN will gather at Munster Town Hall at 6 PM for a vigil of solidarity and unity for peace and justice in light of the recent travel ban. We invite you to bring a candle or flashlight as we bring light against darkness. We ask you to bring signs that celebrate our mission of solidarity and unity. Then we ask that you act by contacting elected officials to let them know that we gathered in solidarity and in peace. This is our message and our eternal hope for our country.

I fear that the Trump administration is sparking a Constitutional crisis. I chose not to be afraid. I believe that if we do not stand up for the rights of others, that Pastor Niemoller's warning can come to pass. We should also remember these words from Benjamin Franklin:

Quote:
We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.

It's a Crisis that will be resolved when Trump's Yes-Man is appointed to the Supreme Court. And the Republicans WILL appoint him because of the promise of getting everything they've ever wanted... especially the abolition of Roe V. Wade. Because then the new Court will simply order those lower courts to toe the line.

On the other hand we might get a new one if CalExit passes... and other states start thinking of the same...the beginning of the end of the Republic.

Well, that's all that she was. There hasn't been an Attorney General since Jan 20.

Sessions is likely to be approved on Thursday

Dana was appointed according to standard procedure. Boente was dropped in out of convenience, with no oversight or accountability from Congress. Doesn't that concern you a little?

In this week's list of things to be outraged about, the fact that she left 72 hours early is very much lower than the fact that all the senior staff in the State department were fired.

Or that 'religious freedom to remove LGBT people from their federal government jobs, and refuse them service everywhere else' will be implemented in a few days.

Reversing LGBT protections
Right now, it includes overturning a directive that bars discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in the federal workforce and those who contract with the government.

That might mean anything, such as a federal employee refusing to serve a gay person due to a religious objection.

And here's my favorite legal blog explainging why the appointment is perfectly legal and well within the President's powers

So... I wonder if it's actually legal to make House staff do work for you and sign NDA's about it, including to not tell their employers what they were doing... they work for the Legislative Branch, don't they?

It should be noted that the first article was published under the auspices of the AWC Family Foundation, which counts among it's sponsors the right-wing Heritage Foundation.

So yeah, right wing white bread woman considers the Black Lives Matter movement dangerous. That's exactly what her kind said about Dr. Martin Luther King, despite the fact that all of his marches were non-violent. So she writes with cherry-picked statistics that ignore the greater reality.

It is significantly different. They are employed by the office of the congressperson. They were ordered to provide the service of their position to a 3rd party who has significant influence over their futures, while still on the congressperson's dime, and then required to not tell their actual employer about the interaction at all, not just the contents of that interaction.

In other news of staggering cluelessness;

Trump has bragged about how CIA officers gave him 'one continuous standing ovation' because they never sat down the entire time he was speaking to them... apparently unaware that government protocol dictates that you rise when the president enters the room and only sit when he tells you to... which Trump never did.

Over at the State Department, more than 100 of the non-fired employees had signed on to a dissent letter which has been circulating about Trump's immigration order. The White House has said that anyone taking such a position does not belong in the government and should leave... apparently unaware that State Department dissent letters are a time honored tradition and signatories are protected by law against retaliation. Still, many department members are apparently now reconsidering publicly including their names because they don't trust this administration to follow that law.
