Reincarnate on a 2nd level Character?

So the reincarnate spell states that when a character is reincarnated she receives two negative levels, but if they are first level, they instead take -2 Con. What about a 2nd level character though? Won't two negative levels kill the character?

Obviously as GM I can always Rule 0 it how I want, but was curious as to whether or not there was an official ruling in that regard.

As always, thanks in advance for any help!

The only thing really around is this provision from the CRB's Glossary:

PRD wrote:
A creature whose permanent negative levels equal its Hit Dice cannot be brought back to life through spells like raise dead and resurrection without also receiving a restoration spell, cast the round after it is restored to life.

Ok thanks, just seemed weird that a 1st level character could be reincarnated but not a 2nd level character.

Yeah, that's one of those cases of bad wording... There is no rational reason why a 1st level character can be reincarnated and a 2nd level character cannot.

It's a case using common sense about what must have been the intent...

Was my thinking as well Zelda, and as this has come up in a game I am GM in its easy enough to house rule. Just kind of funny when we looked at it. :P

I suspect the wording is left over from 3.5 when all methods of raising the dead got you one negative level. When they changed the spell to give an extra negative level they forgot to change the wording.

Probably 2nd level characters should either get the -2 con or one negative level and -1 con.

Though it would be really nice if they'd get around to FAQ/errataing it as andygal suggests. It's been a known bug/feature since PfRPG came out, and everyone official keeps ignoring it.

Aye, a FAQ would be good. I had completely missed the difference between D&D and Pathfinder on that. I'm allowing it with the -2 Con and had assumed it would work. Ironically it was the affected player that brought up the discrepancy.

It may not come up often, as PFS doesn't allow reincarnate and a 2nd level party generally can't afford or find someone to cast raise dead (and will struggle to arrange reincarnate in many campaigns).

That's a fair point Starglim, it was just a peculiarity of this particular campaign that they were able to do so.

well Reincarnate at second level has to be the GMs doing as characters of that quality don't have the means or cash to accomplish that kind of spell.

Clearly the spells were meant to bring character's back from the dead. Just some common sense tweaking of the text to fix the gaff.

Even more so at first level, but there's a specific clause in the rulebook dealing with that unlikely case.

To be clear, I don't think that one should read the rules in a manner that concludes that 2nd-level characters are unique in their inability to be raised/reincarnated, nor do I believe that was Paizo's intent. It's just that this feature/bug has been known and discussed for years and (imo) should be acknowledged with a FAQ/errata.
