Ice Storm vs Black Tentacles

Advice

So I'm looking at perfect Spell for a Witch

I'm thinking about a selective, dazing, persistent spell currently.

It seems like Ice Storm is a better choice to me because it does two damage types so its more likely to hurt higher level creatures with elemental resistances or damage reduction, and hurting them is essential to getting off the dazing effect.

I'm totally open to other spells if you know better ones, or tricks for hitting the undead :P pretty sure you can't daze mindless creatures but please correct me if I'm wrong.

As it is there is a handful of hexes that work on the undead and other than that you're probably best looking for a nice patron or summoning.

Of those two, I'd go with ice storm. Black Tentacles are too unreliable with high CR creature's high CMD, ability to fly or outright freedom of movement.

Also, there is NO creature type that's immune to dazing. That's what makes dazing spell so powerful that many consider it broken.

Undead are one of the big weaknesses of the witch. I'd usually rely on the conjuration spells to fight them. Glitterdust, Summon Monster.

What's your patron?

Oh Hey Blave, I was just in your thread :P

Really? I thought Dazing was mind effecting
Well this makes my Witch quite a lot more powerful than I thought
Hazar :P

The Patron is Time, For Haste, Teleport, Disintegrate and eventually Time Stop should it get that far. Also fits that character in general.

Hm... Time doesn't really help with fighting undead except for disintegrate. You could fall back to support the party with haste or debuff the undead with misfortune + cackle.

Or you could try something fancy like dazing mass cure light wounds :D

Dazing Mass cure light wounds is a pretty nifty idea actually, were it not for the fact it would be an 8th level spell so comes online only two levels earlier than my Ice storm would.

I think it will come down to supporting the team a lot of time, haste, misfortune still works on undead but only worth it if theres only a couple of them.
The other option would be Retribution + Split Hex.

seems like a decent idea.

Honestly finding out Dazing works on mindless things is a big relief.

Oh, right. I kinda forget the delayed Cure access of the witch. Still a nice trick to surprise your GM :D

For a witch, it's a very good trick. For casters with serious offensive power (as oposed to the witch's debuff-style) it can get pretty rediculously overpowered very fast.

It would be funny to do a dazing cure light wounds mass I must admit.

Yeah for other casters particularly Druids its seems insane
where as for a Witch I think its probably just necessary for dealing with undead :P

The spell daze is mind effecting but the status and metamagic Dazed is not

thanks for the further clarification.

...although your GM may rule otherwise if all his encounters are ended by Dazing spells.

It's just for the mindless/undead ones ;)

Sovereign Court

Careful there. Selective Spell only works on spells with Duration: Instantaneous, which neither of those two are.

Oh wow good to know
