Looking for advice on divine boon

Advice

Hello my brain trust,

My players are venturing into an old temple to a god of madness. Now after poking around a bit, one of them will meet a shade of the god himself. He will offer them to convert to him and grant a boon. And this is where i draw blank...

I want the boon to be madness themed, be a substantial advantage, but have an equally substantial drawback.

Any concrete or abstract ideas are more than welcome.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

If it were me and I knew the shade was of a god of madness I'd leave before he finished talking.

Still, ideas.

"To see the world as it truly is under all the illusions."
Maybe a bonus to disbelieve illusions at first, scaling up to see invisibility or arcane sight and eventually to true seeing. A hefty penalty to perception & initiative though from all the distracting sights.

"To never know fear again."
Immunity to fear on the one hand, a penalty to AC on the other from a failure to take care.

"To know the contents of others' minds."
Detect or seek thoughts spell-like ability, possibly as the oracle brain drain revelation. If the boon recipient damages the target in the next hour they take half as much damage from the remaining link however.

"To crush weaker minds before you."
Another SLA, possibly lesser confusion scaling to confusion or feeblemind as the boon recipient goes up levels. If the target makes the save however then the boon recipient may have to make a save or be confused for a round.

give the 8th level madness domain straight up scaling with level with the following caveat: the domain give the aura of madness and it effects friend and foe except just enemies, so the player has to think tactically when to use it or risk brainfrying his fellow players
