Pricing Siege Equipment

Hi!

The 3rd level party I DM for found an airship and want to improve it. Primarily with cannons.

It's a steampunk campaign, so gunpowder AKA thunder medicine is available.

But the DMG doesn't have prices for siege equipment! Pistols are 250 gp, muskets are 500 gp. Pistols do 1d10, and cannon do 8d10, so would 2000 gp be right? It seems a little pricy, but they have a range of about half a mile, but it also takes 3 actions to load, aim, and fire a cannon.

So far, there hasn't been a lot of money given out during the campaign, but they did get a free mansion and airship, plus some magic items.

Sovereign Court

I think that 2000 gp sounds right. That's a big order.

It can be the reason for the adventuring.

One PC also wants a brace of muskets: $500 each! :-O

Sovereign Court

Yep! People like to complain that there is nothing to buy in D&D if magic items aren't for sale, but there is always something to buy. Land and titles, or instance.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

IRL, I'm VERY anti-monarchy/royalty/nobility/etc., so I doubt I personally would have fun buying a fantasy title, but maybe my players would.

Or more properly, membership in an exclusive Ladies' and Gentlemen's Club, since the campaign is just a big Victorian steampunk city and a bunch of jungles and glaciers.

1 Cannon = 4 muskets?

1 Cannon = 8 pistols?

The government should be able to afford many cannons at those prices.

The government probably have many cannons. I'm just wondering what a fair price for the PCs should be.

Sovereign Court

I like the idea of an exclusive club. Guilds too.

The city is run by a dozen guilds ever since the king went mad 20 years ago.

Maybe they will join one or more of them....

I understand that, my point was that I thought 1 cannon equals 8 pistols or 4 muskets devalues the idea of the cannon considerably. I thought the price was to low for PCs, military or anyone else for that matter when you compare the weapons. But its not my campaign, so no biggie.

How many muskets or pistols do you think would be worth 1 cannon in a trade? That's how I would price things. If you feel 8 pistols is a fair trade for 1 cannon, then you are fine.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

That's a good point. It takes 3 actions to do 8d10 to one target, or 8 actions to do 8d10+Dex to up to 8 targets.

I think it's pretty equivalent. Especially since 8d10 is kind of overkill, so a lot of the damage is going to be "wasted."

Also, the airship will have a crew of six PCs.

A sky pirate rogue swashbuckler (pilot/captain)
A scavenger warlock (engineer)
A sage knowledge cleric 1/shadow x (navigator? medic?)
A tempest cleric (wind summoner? cannon shooter? medic!)
A brontomancer wizard (wind summoner, blaster, cannon shooter?)
An outlander monk of the (fiery) elements (cannon shooter? rigging/crows nest?)
