Do alchemist bombs work underwater?

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

Since alchemist bombs are a combination of natural chemistry and supernatural magic, can they be used underwater? This came up in this afternoon's game and the GM ruled against it.

Thanks!

No, unless they have the Underwater Demolition discovery from the ARG.

Underwater Demolition (Ex)
Benefit: The alchemist gains the ability to throw bombs underwater (normally, thrown weapons cannot be used underwater), including throwing from the air into the water. If the bomb travels through water, the range increment is reduced to 5 feet.

I read extensively on the subject as I have an alchemist player for Adventure Path that had an underwater part, won't say which for spoilers.

A regular fire bomb will not have any effect underwater, in fact the alchemist can't even throw it unless he has Underwater Demolition

But another type of bomb would work, sonic or force would be the best

I disagree on one part, the discovery says "The alchemist gains the ability to throw bombs underwater". Which would imply, that without the discovery you can't throw any type of bomb underwater.

If you look up underwater combat, Thrown weapons are ineffective underwater, even when launched from land. So without Underwater Demolition, an alchemist can't even throw a bomb while underwater. However, if they have the Underwater Demo discovery and still have fire bombs, they are still ineffective, they would need another type of bomb to be effective.

Thrown weapons are ineffective underwater, including Bombs.

Nothing in their description suggests that Bomb do not otherwise function underwater if they are not thrown. A Delayed Bomb, for example, should function normally.

Bombs that do fire damage don't work underwater, but other bombs should be fine

Fire: Nonmagical fire (including alchemist's fire) does not burn underwater. Spells or spell-like effects with the fire descriptor are ineffective underwater unless the caster makes a caster level check (DC 20 + spell level). If the check succeeds, the spell creates a bubble of steam instead of its usual fiery effect, but otherwise the spell works as described. A supernatural fire effect is ineffective underwater unless its description states otherwise. The surface of a body of water blocks line of effect for any fire spell. If the caster has made the caster level check to make the fire spell usable underwater, the surface still blocks the spell's line of effect.

Edit: If an Alchemist had the Underwater Demolition feat, I would argue that the feat allows bombs to function underwater, including bombs that do fire damage, and therefore meet the bolded proviso.

Ah ok, I see what you mean now.
