Quirky Silver Surfer

Comics

Just got back into comics and picked up a couple of one of my childhood favorites, Silver Surfer. When and why did he become a quirky / light hearted book with a hipster girlfriend? Did his entire backstory get reworked at some past point because Fantastic Four ruined him in a movie?

At least one of my friends enjoys quirky silver surfer, who has been languishing in 90s grit for a while. I am not a fan of the character, nor do I know much about him however.

The current Silver Surfer is good. It is only quirky and light-hearted once every 3-5 issues. For the most part it is serious. Although, Dawn is quirky all the time.
They met when someone was trying to force the Surfer to do his bidding by kidnapping, via galactic teleportation, the person who was most important to him. (His power was to identify the most important person of the person he was dealing with.)
The Surfer had never met Dawn before, so after the villain was defeated he took her home. Dawn had never left her small town before and wanted to explore the galaxy with Norinn. They have been together for about 3 years now (real time, not comic time).

Ok, if it is not always so quirky I will give it another chance. I was fairly worried that cannon had been completely destroyed ala a DC crisis.

FYI - The Silver Surfer celebrated his 50th year in comics this year.
