Gotta say, as neat as all the new expansion announcements are, I'm a bit miffed alot of them are just grafting material onto models that were already in the store.
That said, I'll willingly do a 180 and eat a hat for a full release of the King and/or Scribe...
(Also hope they include enough bits to make all the inspiration gear. All the art for them is excellent)

Tangentially related, but does anyone in the thread actually have the game? I'm honestly thinking of taking the plunge but the plunge is expensive and I'd rather not spend near a thousand bucks on some (admittedly very well made) paperweights. Most sites seem to rate the game highly and being playable solo is a nice plus, but does anyone have any personal opinions here about the gameplay/model assembly?
I have the game. If you're interested in trying it yourself, and are near Chicago, drop me a personal message.
Gameplay is challenging. Your victories are exhilarating, your losses soul-crushing. You fall in love with your little hunters moments before you lose them forever. Each battle with creature you hunt, or that hunts you, is a tactical puzzle; I find that going in to each fight with as few spoilers as possible is the most fun approach.
The miniatures take some time and effort to assemble. Never having done so much as a model plane, I was worried about that aspect of the game, but I found that I really enjoy the hobby. I don't like painting them, but I'm considering a mass prime-and-dip approach.

The offer's appreciated, but while I may be east coast, Chicago is a bit too far out of the way for me. Still, thanks for the opinion, it all goes a long way to making me willing to part with an exorbitant amount of cash. I'll probably end up making the buy at the end of the campaign so I can consider all the new expansions.

Ngghhhh, I'm starting to get torn now though.
I love the game and figurines and the art and lore and want them. But I don't really play in physical games anymore so they would never get used most likely, and I haven't put any of them together yet anyway.
So I guess I'm just trying to see if I can justify buying them...

That kickstarter looks so awesome. Artwork looks phenomenal but between the price tag and the likely chance I would never get a good opportunity to play it, I'll have to hold off. Really sad.
That's what I'm struggling with right now.
One thing that I have used though, is the amount of inspiration and imagination I've gained from the stories the first version of the game provided, which has been incredibly useful for me.

Yeah, the setting and art is just something you really don't see a lot of these days, part of the reason its so intriguing to me. Now we just wait for a KD Roleplaying Book. I can only imagine how many nerds would sling money at that pitch (me being one of them)...

Hilariously the first Kickstarter was supposed to be a gateway for that as the end goal, with Monster just being a little side project for Poots.
Now $10 Million USD later...

Go figure. Seriously, you probably couldn't find a better time to release a KD RP book than now. Dark and Low Fantasy is super in what with game of thrones and all. Mysterious and bare bones story telling has been hugely popularized by Souls type games, and there's a huge dearth of RPGs that are unflinchingly dark and gritty. Plus you have cheesecake baked in already, always a plus :D
Rysky |
Its good that you have gotten something useful and meaningful out of that investment. My thrifty side is telling me that I shouldn't bother looking at it any more.
Perhaps for you they have some book as an add-on you could purchase that has what you seek?
I would absolutely love an "Art of Death" book or something in that vein.

Meanwhile, one thing I noticed while browsing the comments for the witch update is that there's a pretty noticeable pushback against the witches due to being too pinup/sexy/porny (depending on who's typing) for the setting.
I sorta see where they're coming from on the one hand (shapely and busty women in essentially gimp gear as a nemesis compared to even more mundane looking foes like the Manhunter or Butcher is a bit of a disconnect), on the other it's not like ladies looking like that are entirely disconnected from the game (White Speakers, the Lion Knight's groupies, and the Flower Witch+Disciples if you go on the logic that it's only a matter of time before they get a proper expansion) and eternal youth/beauty is pretty staple for a lot of witch-like stories.
I dunno, as I said earlier, I like the crunch pitch more than the models in this case, what do you guys think.
Rysky |
For the Red Witches (and the Lion Knight's attendants as well) I do have to point out that they are all White Speakers, so there's not multiple separate groups of women with the same skimpy outfit running around.
That being said, the justification for the skimpy outfit is the readily available aces to wounding oneself to get to blood to empower the Speaker abilities. The art in the book showing off the White Speakers doing so is NOT pleasant.
So on one side yes their outfit is overly sexualized, on the other though they have been with KD since the beginning, they're not just getting shoved in.

The fetish gear and stripper heels the White Speakers wear is meant to be erotic, sure. I like the erotic elements of the game, which mesh well with the body horror--fear and arousal can enhance each other. However, I think a flaw in the first release of the game is that its erotic elements mostly appeal to hetero men; In other places, the creator has indicated he wants to broaden that appeal, for which I am glad, but this expansion isn't breaking any ground in that area.
The justification for the White Speakers' gear is as skimpy as the clothes themselves. It exposes lots of skin because that's useful when they're using their blood powers, and it doubles as restraints when they go into oracular fits. Eh, as lampshades go, not the worst.
In terms of menace, well, White Speakers are supposed to be giantesses, 7-8' tall as well as statuesque. The Red Witch concept art that shows them with dramatically different builds appeals to me; the mesomorph in particular is well done. White Speakers also have powers related to controlling blood and controlling minds with mystical stories. They are definitely in the league of Forsakers (such as the Butcher) or Twilight Knights in terms of personal power. Three of them coming after your settlement would be bad news.
If some folks don't want the expansion because they don't like the art direction, hey, that's their business, and they're welcome to their opinions. For my part I don't like the Frogdog model. The nice thing about having so many expansions is you can pick and choose.

That actually brings up a setting question. Are the "class" humans for lack of a better term (saviors, twilight knights, white speakers, manhunters, etc) a separate species than the rank and file survivors or are they just post humans modified by various entities/relics/etc? I was under the assumption they were just high level (figuratively speaking) survivors.
Also, small update: More uses for Scouts from the gambling box, more pin ups, and an armor set worthy of an expansion: the Death Armor. Really curious what makes the armor worthy of its own expansion (beyond looking awesome if the concept art is anything to go by)

Twilight Knights and White Speakers are modified humans, though if you use a class system like Pathfinder to mimic them then yeah they could be classes. The Manhunter is not human. In the slightest.
Tarik Blackhands |
You're the expert man. But out of all the monsters in the range, Manhunter is pretty human looking to me. Maybe he's hiding a spare pair of arms under that hat or something.
Anyway, another quiet update today. Female romantic to pair with the male version for the gambling chest (eh), a campaign book for running unique games with the current 12 expansions with special events, beasts, variable lengths, and an introduction on the node system they're talking about (the big part of the update if you ask me), anudder pinup, a reprint of Spidicules, and a proper release for the false messengers complete with rules.
The campaign book seems cool and is honestly a better deal than what the price tag would suggest (hardcover book, a monster, and various other gubbins). Just wish it was a generic add on, I don't like further temptation for stuff to get :(
Rysky |
Yes, the Manhunter "looks" human, but that's about it. It ends at the skin. The items and art showing what happens if you defeat it prove this thoroughly :3
I'm excited for the campaign book, and while I'm not interested in the Pond Scum Pinup I AM extremely curious about whatever area or monster it might be the pinup of.
Rysky |
The only female pinups I think I'm interested in so far is the Frogdog (PUPPIES!) and Black Knight (she just looks so playful and hilariously awesome).
Also did anyone else catch the digititrade legs on the Black Knight? I haven't put my boutique one together yet so I had never noticed that.
I think the Knights in general are my favourite part of the game.
Tarik Blackhands |
Pretty sure the pondscum pinup is for the Frogdog set or more broadly the Cess Pond.
As for the knights, I like their appeal too, partially because they tend to avoid the design "pitfall" other monsters tend to have which is "place hands/faces/boobs/dongs in places there should not be hands/faces/boobs/dongs to appear more monstrous," It makes sense on say the Wet Nurse but not so much the Sunstalker and his cloak of arms if you can follow me.
Also it helps that the Black Knight in particular looks like he walked straight out of Dark Souls which is always a fine place to pillage fashion from.
Rysky |
Maybe, but I hadn't thought of that since we already had the Frogdog Armor Pinup, hmm...
I'm not for sure on the Sunstalker but I believe the tentacle penises are similar to the Wet Nurse in that they can impregnate/hook-up/interact somehow with humans to produce baby Sunstalkers. Would have to go reread the expansion to be sure.
*nods*
The Black Knight is very badass, just trying to figure out what animal he emulates, from the cauldrons and legs I'm thinking Dog, but the floppy ears also leans towards Bunny. Bunydog?
Tarik Blackhands |
I'd figure BK just has a dog or wolf for his animal. It certainly fits with some of the armor concepts, Hunter and Warrior sets in particular which specifically call out canines.
And now that wolves are brought up, I'm perilously close to thinking that Knight is the consequence of the designer playing Dark Souls and deciding to throw the Elite Knight set and Artorias into a blender...

Two fair points!
The floppy ears just caught my attention :3

I was all set to be salty about the Inverted Mountain campaign not being included in the prior campaign book but then I remembered that was for the original 12.
Still, nice update, I'll probably end up passing on this one since I have fairly minimal desire for some of the new expansions *cough frogdog cough*
Also, not sure if a typo or not, but is the Screaming God meant to be part of the Inverted Mountain or he just his own critter? He wasn't included in the campaign breakdown...
