Reusing old PCs

Online Campaigns General Discussion

As it happens from time to time with pbp threads sometimes fizzle out. And sometimes you find the PCs you created for them have an appeal, and you think you'd like to try them out again.
I find that begs a question.

What do you do with the PC used in the now defunct thread?

The posts to the thread they were in are still there for others to look back on. So is it right to just delete the PC info that reflected the decisions and actions posted in that thread?

Or should a whole new alias be created every time you try to reuse a PC? But then you run the risk of not being able to get the right name for the alias.

To bad there isn't a way to archive a character sheet in a profile. the only idea I can thin k of would be to condense the sheet into a spoiler tag at the bottom of the profile maybe, with a link to the adventure thread it was used in.

Any thoughts out there?

I recycle aliases all the time. The name stays, but everything else about them can change.

This is Rataji's third iteration. She started out a male wizard in a Serpents' Rise game. Then she became a half-elf heaven's oracle. Now she is an aasimar swashbuckler. Each time the personality changed.

I archive old character sheets in google docs. If I ever need them again, I can pull it out.

I unashamedly reuse PC aliases if the game they were in fizzled out since I don't like alias bloat or redundant aliases. I generally do what Hmm does and save the background information as a Google document and keep the HeroLab profile in case I ever need them.

PC death is a little different. If the PC dies, then I'll retire the alias.

I'm with them--have reused characters multiple times, and for similar reasons. Frex, the character I finished Shattered Star with had previously been in two RotRL campaigns that fizzled out. Thinking about what Lady Ladile said about retiring aliases of PCs that died, even though that particular PC didn't die, I probably won't reuse that alias. Starting from scratch when I associate the character with high-level play wouldn't work well.

Always recycle. This one has also gone through three iterations and never been picked. Mainly because he's a warlord and Path of War is rare so I don't get to try often. I should ask for feedback from DM's but keep forgetting. But I almost always design my characters to be flexible in background so that they fit in a lot of different places. I change up the build for the new game and maybe a little bit of background. Rarely do I do an entire overhaul. If I do its on the characters I have the least vested interest in. A character that came to mind on the spur of the moment but was rejected.

Seriously, who wouldn't want a halfling that could one day trip and throw a dragon or giant?

I have a number of archetypical PCs. I reuse them in home games all the time. I would have no trouble doing so here. Sometimes Ardelaneu is a paladin, sometimes a fighter. Auris usually stays monk. Falandar is an elven archer. It all depends on what fits the game and my whims.
