Pathfinder Requirements to Run Strange Aeons?

Strange Aeons

I've been looking for an adventure path to run as my first time GMing, and this one seems to fit the bill. Can I run it with the Core Rules, Advanced Player's Guide, and Bestiary, or am I going to be missing something vital?

I would highly suggest investing in the Horror Adventures book as well, otherwise you will be missing out on a lot for this AP. Occult Adventures would be a good option as well.

Good luck!

Silver Crusade

In Search of Sanity uses monsters from Bestiaries 1-5 (yes, all of them), but you can pull the monster stat blocks from d20pfsrd.com.

There are also references to game mechanics from Occult Adventures, Horror Adventures, and Ultimate Intrigue.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The first two parts reference:

All five bestiaries.
Gamemastery Guide
The Advanced Player's Guide
Inner Sea World Guide
Inner Sea Gods
NPC Codex
Occult Adventures
Ultimate Combat
Ultimate Equipment
Lost Treasures
Horror Adventures
Ultimate Magic

You don't *need* to have all of them (like, the places where it references the NPC Codex and Lost Treasures are pretty much only in passing and don't impact anything) but if you're really just starting to GM, I'd recommend something else. Like maybe Gallows of Madness (which, with the exception of a single enemy that's reprinted anyway, is pretty much Core only).

If you don't know about this already, let me direct you to The Official Pathfinder SRD. It's completely free and legal, and hosted on this very website. It contains almost all the written rules and stats for every single hardcover book and bestiary Paizo has ever published for Pathfinder. It isn't formatted as nicely as the books, and is missing all the fun pictures, but it's a great reference, especially if you don't want to buy 10 books just to try an AP.

Not to talk you out of buying Pathfinder books, but if you're nervous about spending that much money, it's nice to know that you don't *have* to buy all the books if you don't want to.

Oh yeah... that's a detail I keep forgetting, 'cause I buy PDFs of a bunch of stuff.

Still, I would stand by my earlier mention that something like Gallows of Madness (or an AP like Rise of the Runelords or Hell's Rebels).

I just started DMing a year back and I used this series of 4 adventures and it worked brilliantly and was easy to run (especially the 1st one) ...
1. Crypt of the Everflame (classic dungeon romp)
2. My own short wilderness adventure (to get them up to level 3) based on an island on the Gray Lake near the crypt.
3. Masks of the Living God (excellent infiltration adventure)
4. Fangwood Keep (where they will unravel the secrets of the Darkblight)
5. My own long wilderness/dungeon adventure in which the party discover the monsters spreading the Darkblight (I used the map of the Marideth River Valley in Fangwood Keep and fleshed out Deadeye's Haunt, Sigurx's cave, etc etc).
6. Carnival of Tears (horror module that I have slightly modfified to relate to the Darkblight)

The Darkblight is affecting the forest of Fangwood. I have it as it was started by Treerazer through a poisonous magical portal.

I opted not to run City of Golden Death as the follow up to Crypt/Masks because I wanted to finish this personalized adventure path off with the darkly hilarious Carnival of Tears.

It took the party from 1st level through to 5th.
