Genie-kins, Adopted and Celestial Community

Rules Questions

Can a Genie-kin with the Adopted and Celestial Community traits use Cure Light Wounds instead of their daily spell-like abilities as an Aasimar would?

I think Celestial Community may not be a valid choice as it appears to be both a Racial and Race trait (based on d20pfsrd entry), meaning it requires specific physiology to work (maybe?).

I assume Genie Kin are Ifrit and similar?

This is an Ask your GM, because it is tied pretty close to an ability Aasimar have that the others may not.

This is similar to the Half-Orc Tusked option, which is legit (albeit strange and unwieldy). I would say that since the Celestial Community trait simply states spell-like ability, which Genie-Kin do get, that this should work.

Honestly, I like this more than the Tusked option. This actually makes sense with a Planetouched race whereas suddenly growing Tusks simply by being raised around orcs/half-orcs just... doesn't.

Definitely ask your GM though. If this is for PFS play, then I would say you have solid ground to stand on making this work. Table variation may occur, though, so be forewarned.

Thanks for all your answers!

And yet another example of why I hate adopted. At least this one doesn't give all level 0 spells infinite use.

There was a trait for the geniekin races that let you turn a use of your SLA into a level 0 spell. But tieflings have that one option for at will deathwatch (because deathwatch is supposed to have been an exceedingly minor utility spell).

I am not sure how well the mechanics actually meshed... because they were never meant to mesh. Adopted basically means that every race trait has to be double checked against every possible ability of every race... poor design since it leaves these loopholes due to combining random things like this.

Of course, I might just be unjustly biased because I was around to deal with all threads about catfolk barbarians raised by half orcs in the ways of growing 1/2 foot long teeth. My hate is strong on this topic.

It looks to me like it would work.

It doesn't reference any aasimar-specific racial ability, just "SLA" which the genie-kin has.

I like it!

To my knowledge, adopted only allows you to select from humanoid traits, which means you cannot select aasimar traits (since they are Outsiders).

I think you are mixing up the Racial Heritage feat, and the Adopted trait.

Actually, I'm mixing it up with the Adoptive Parentage human alternate racial trait. Also, the Nethys link references Advanced Player's Guide page 1, which in my printing has no text in it.

In my spite filled perspective, the human racial trait is the only one of that ilk that is acceptible. It is just 'take their weapon familiarity, which at best gives you early access to exotic weapon proficiency'.

The rest only seem to come up when someone has found a loop hole.

Of course, maybe I just have a terrible sample size. I mostly hang out on the rules/advice forums, where people only get excited enough to post there about it when they find that loophole. I am sure there are plenty of perfectly decent usage of it that isn't just is mostly just flavor.
